Restart the computer. It has happened to both my copies of Windows Vista on both my laptop and desktop, and one copy of Windows 7, on my desktop. Simply restarting the computer fixed it, and it's been fine since.

If that doesn't work, do what newsposter said and call Microsoft, you may be able to request a new product key if you can convince them it's genuine.

Also, check to see if your Software Licensing Service is running. It is necessary for the OS to authenticate itself, apparently.

In connection with what the OP mentioned...

If someone has MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) installed on their machine, does it not mean that the OS is already validated as being legit? Because MSE can only be used on legit Win OS machines. So, what happens if, like in the OP's case (where he bought and used a legit version of the OS), you are using a valid version of the OS, running MSE (which itself validates the OS before it can be installed and run on the machine) suddenly and for whatever reason throws up a "Not valid copy" message? Does this mean that (1) MSE will not work in such cases though it was installed and run prior to the message appearing? And, (2) should not having MSE installed and running on the machine should be validation enough that the OS installed on the machine is legit?

I've had this happen a few times, enough times (with legit copies I might add) that I have given up and decided to just reinstall the OS each time it happens.

For some reason some of the updates hose legitimate installations once in a while.

Wow! So, even after MSE validates, sometimes updates can make a mess of the validation! Not good!

    Thanks for the heads-up.

Not all updates mess up validation, only the WGA update (which is not selected by default).

I've had this happen to one of my computers. Going to www.microsoft.com/genuine and running their validation thing fixed it.
