just turned my laptop on and that epic windows 10 window was open once again. Anywho it said it WILL update to windows 10 in 10th march at night or something I was "well no you don't" and it gave up. (for now I think).
tl;tr Running older windows than 10 it might update your OS automaticly without your permission or something. I'm just PC peasant and sharing my experience with other peasants. (There are master PC race somewhere who doesn't need to be informed about this)
Long live the windows 7. 2020.... hehehhehehe Should I change to apple. Anyway robots have their intelligence high enough to turn against us! so keep on eye your computers that runs windows!

Either read and follow suggestions here http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...isable-telemetry.780476/page-73#post-10211518
or, if you don't want to be bothered, let it be, even after update you can roll back to Win 7.hmscott likes this. -
It would be funny if it appeared on a satirical sketch... Kinda saddening that it is in fact not a joke. Keep relentlessly pushing something until people give up fighting it and just embrace it. The only difference between Windows users and Winston Smith is that Microsoft doesn't insist that you love them - just yet, anyway.
Linux still isn't there yet IMO - which is a shame.hmscott likes this. -
Another solution would be to disable automatic updates in the older Windows versions. Running 7 on my desktop and I haven't been bothered by this resurgence.
-
Actually disabling auto updates on it's own won't do a thing: either you don't ever update, which may be risky, since you have known bugs not patched up, or you update manually, but then you need to keep a track of which updates to take and which to refuse and this could be tricky.
Just for the record, I do manual updates only as long as I can remember and still managed to get Win 10 advert on some computers.
BTW Win 10 is not that bad: shutdown telemetry, advertising and auto updates and I'm fine with it.
Also, just last night I was monitoring internet traffic on my Win 7 computer and out of the blue I noticed Dr Watson was sending telemetry to MS servers. I was sure I shutdown everything and blocked all MS telemetry hosts, but apparently not. Feel like fighting loosing battle.hmscott likes this. -
I only bother to install security updates anymore. After MS decided to pull off this annoying Windows 10 upgrade update months ago, I switched over to manually dealing with my Windows 7 updates.
Windows 10 isn't "bad" insomuch as it's just as terrible as other recent versions of Windows in terms of telemetry and other foolishness. If you notice my sig, I have a Windows 10 laptop, which I use fairly often. Of course, I set up as per the guides released by Phoenix, et. al. to try to minimize that sort of thing, with the eventual goal of setting up a Linux firewall/DNS server on my personal network to blacklist all the troublesome MS telemetry URLs (as well as other non-MS problem sites). -
Use the Hosts file here and block your machine from sending anything out to those sites completely. Although we shouldn't have to go to these lengths in my humble opinion, its just plain wrong.
-
That only works if the software in question will query the Hosts file before querying DNS cache/servers, which is not something you can count on with the MS telemetry (or Facebook, thinking about it).alexhawker likes this.

Another way could be to add them to blocked sites on your router perhaps do you think?
*Edit* just read your comments about setting up a firewall - I think that would be a good idea and may look at doing that as well.Last edited: Mar 8, 2016 -
I mean, there's no harm in having both a modified Hosts file and a better DNS solution. I just wanted to get across that Hosts file blocking isn't the end-all for blocking sites or elements within sites (or now, the OS).hmscott likes this.

Got you, understood. It comes to something when you can't trust your own kit these days and have to take measures to stop it calling home with details about you and also downloading and installing its own 'upgrade' even when you tell it not too!

It appears that windows 10 update is IMPORTANT lul...

Just reread your other comment, completely overlooked your question about adding rules to the router. It could be possible, depending on what software your router's running. I know I can't do it on my stock Cisco router, but perhaps OpenWRT or the like allow for it? Don't use it myself, so I'm unsure.hmscott likes this.

Hi Jarhead.
I've found a way to seemingly block sites once and for all by adding them to my Netgear Router. I used a combination of the hosts file on NBR and details from here
Quite straightforward to do and should stop all machines I have here from sending anything to those sites listed.

My hosts blocker not only block Windows telemetry reports but adware site and popup ads on sites I visits. So that more or less kills Windows popups. Also I use the Gwx and DisableWindow10 registry edit to kills the taskbar Nag and Windows update notification so I only get the Windows 7 updates I need and even if I update the Win10 Nags my Gwx effectivly squashes the Nags.

Microsoft, back at it again:
If you don’t want Windows 10, do this!
http://www.ghacks.net/2016/03/13/if-you-dont-want-windows-10-do-this/
" Reports are coming in by users from around the world on sites like Reddit that machines running Windows 7 or Windows 8 have been updated -- once again -- to Windows 10 automatically.
They report that the update was automated, and that they did not receive any prompt or option to stop the process once it was in motion.
Some noticed that their machines were upgraded to the new operating system after coming back from lunch or checking their computer in the morning after leaving it turned on for the night.
This is not the first time that this happened to some users running Windows 7 or 8 on their machines. Users were experiencing the same thing in October 2015 and Microsoft apologized later on stating that the enforcement was not intended to be delivered automatically."
Thanks to @Phoenix

Still sad we have to go through this hassle in order to keep the OS we want. Im still curious whats going to happen in late July when the free upgrade to win 10 is over. I wont be surprised if they force install Win 10 after the free upgrade is over after its downloaded automatically on their PCs.hmscott likes this.

they will install a virus that makes your cpu run at 100 percent utilization to either blow up your computer or burn down your house forcing you to buy a computer with windows 10 already installed

I certainly wouldn't buy this operating system once they end the free offer period. In fact they should change its name from Windows 10 to 'Dogs Breakfast'

Every time i do a clean install of Win10 (Every couple of months) I use the Microsoft download tool and make a new usb stick, hopefully it will have the latest version.

Yup that's it, that's the newest, fresh squeezed, direct from the bowels of Microsoft
Yes, I am wondering if @Tinderbox (UK) posted in the wrong thread too

I wish it was that easy, I did hide the original update but it seems either a new update has installed or it un-hid itself and installed, guess I have to pay closer attention to the update numbers when I update now.

Thanks for the advice

This is a thread about Windows versions other than Windows 10.
We aren't talking about getting new releases of Windows 10 vs old releases of Windows 10.
We are talking about how to stop Microsoft from Forcing Windows 10 Upgrades onto our Windows 7 / 8.1 systems.Last edited: Mar 17, 2016 -
