Mozilla has started giving Minefield to developers, the next generation of Firefox. You can get a direct download link from Mozilla's servers here, for Windows, Linux, and OS X:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
The installer name says Firefox, but the browser is actually Minefield. I'm going to check it out now. Keep in mind that this is alpha software so it might be a little buggy.

I'm running Minefield now. It definitely runs faster and uses less power than any other browser out there. I have noticed one major problem, though. It uses a faulty color profile on my monitor, which means that some images and sites don't look the way that they should. I think I'm going to switch back to Firefox for now, I'm not a fan of using an alpha browser as my main browser. It is worth a look if you want to check out the future of Firefox.
-
I've run minefield since a day or two ago and agree wholeheartedly: It is FAST! Quite a pleasant surprise over Firefox 3!
Haven't really needed to switch to Firefox yet as my essential add-ons work (do miss TMP though
)
-
I'm going to check this out right now! Thanks for the info!

yey, I'll check it out soon
yesterday I tried FF(again), Opera, and K-melon ... and I'm back to IE (duhh) due to fonts being different and sorting of the bookmarks (cant put folders up top when sorting by name in FF) -
Thanks for the link. Am using it now, and oh my, it's like my Internet has strapped a rocket to it's back end.

Wow. This browser has some snap to it, thanks.
-
Why Mozilla give a different name to this project? Is Firefox still available if this one release to public soon?
-
How does it compate to Chrome in terms of speed?
-
It is faster. Supposedly.
We will only find out for sure when it is officially released and out of alpha/beta. -
I think Minefield will be separate from Firefox. It may still be from Mozilla, but it will have a different name (Hence, "Minefield"). It's still very new release, so what they actually decide to do with it, well....only time will tell.
I have used both, and find Minefield to be faster. Download them both, and compare them on your computer, the speed may differ on someone else's computer. -
pretty cool
-
I've been using it and I like it. I don't find it to be any faster than Firefox 3. What I do find is that it doesn't slow down when i'm on websites that use heavy flash advertisements. That's been a problem for me with FF3.
So far Minefield has been very stable. -
For users that use Asian OS it will screw up the drop shadow of fonts on the desktop.
-
Chrome is still faster for me.
-
Yeps..its fast...I tried it last night!
nice...
Cin
-
It's just Fx's development branch.......
-
Wow. This is by far the fastest browser I've tried. It easily beats Chrome on my laptop.
-
It's what's going to become FF 3.1.....
-
Thanks for the infor Thomas!
Cin
-
Yeah it's just the nightly builds of whatever
-
You guys are acting like its a complete new browser from Mozilla...when it's just dev. updates. OH NOEZZ.
I liked how everyone was like YEAH SO MUCH FASTERRR. -
I liked the part where the Jonas Brothers sang that song.
oops, wrong thread
(downloading now) -
I know that it was a update, but still it is faster...
-
Lol, I know. I keep seeing all these tech news sites reporting Minefield like it's (1) new and (2) a separate browser from Firefox. The misunderstanding is killing me.
Anyway, been using it since January 2007. Never once experienced a major instability, only minor incompatibilities with extensions (and I mean truly incompatible, as in non-version-hack-fixable
). Most people using Minefield aren't even feeling the true speed of it, though. You'd need to enable TraceMonkey (in about:config) to feel the true speed, but I'll let you Google that.
-
^^^^
I like your name. -
Forgive my browser ignorance but what the hell is Minefield and Chrome?
-
Minefield is a new browser made by Mozilla (same people who made Firefox), and it might be the new update for Firefox (I'm not sure on that yet).
And Chrome is a Beta Browser made by Google.
**Beta is a development stage of software wherein the software application is released to an enthusiastic public for large-scale testing and bug discovery. -
Ah thank you.
-
Holy crap. I've google'd it and went through several pages of how it works and all I have to say is that it is truly brilliant.
-
Minefield is not a new browser by Mozilla...its just developer updates for the latest FF version aka FF 3.1
-
Anyone else unable to browse the web with it after a while? I noticed every now and then no matter which browser I used I was not able to browse the web BUT i could use MSN, Skype etc.
Also anyone else annoyed by the new [ctrl] + [tab]? -
I like the ctrl+tab. Since it reverts back to the previous tab instead of circulating in order. The UI could be improved though.
-
Orly? Hehe. I was told it was by Mozilla, and when I downloaded it, the Install said "Firefox", so gullible me thought it was from Mozilla.
-
Fast huh? I'm still waiting on 100 MB download speeds!! !!!
-
So, Minefield is FF3.1?
-
Supposedly.
-
the only thing I miss is the spinning loading icon =/
-
No you misread. It is Mozilla...it's just not a NEW browser. It's just pre-beta updates for the latest version of FireFox.
-
Why thanks. Yours is quite nice too.
Glad I showed the light to at least one person.
Well... no. Minefield is the name Mozilla gives to its nightly builds. It is Pre-Firefox 3.1 in the sense that it will become Firefox when it is released (of course Minefield will then become Pre-Firefox 4). In the simplest words, Firefox is the official release of the browser while Minefield is the nightly build of it. -
And how long will it be before we see an official Firefox 3.1?
-
Soon, Betas are out.
-
Late 2008/early 2009 is what they're (still) saying. Looking at the current status of things, it looks like they still have some work to do. The promised Private Browsing feature (among others) has still not made an appearance. My guess is that it will be available by January 2009. They've still got about 2 months and as we saw in the Firefox 3.0 beta stages, a lot can change between betas.
-
Awesome, thanks.
-
I've got to check this out!
-
The current Minefield build also improves the Acid3 score. (Firefox 3.0.3 gets a score of 71. Minefield currently gets 92.)
Though, it isn't quite as impressive as WebKit's nightly getting a 100 (perfect score). -
Aye caramba! That's snappy.
-
What themes are those?(FF/Vista)
-
Firefox Theme: Naver
Vista Theme: TransblackV2 (No 3rd party software needed) -
Can you install minefield without replacing Firefox 3 or will it replace your install of firefox.
I have been thinking about trying it out but do not want to replace firefox 3 as my primary browser.
Thanks
