Hello there notebookreview forum members! I come to you with a problem i just can not fix on my own. One day all my thumbnails (AVI and MKV) worked perfectly showing me a nice little video preview as the thumbnail.. now all i get is that stupid default thumbnail. I have tried every little trick and every option i could think of, I even reinstalled Windows Vista and i just can not for the life of me get my thumbnails back! I have included a picture to show you what i mean.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Thanks a lot for your time.

    have you reinstalled the codecs?
is that a clean install of vista? or over top of existing?

If the .AVI and .MKV play then the codec's are installed.

Are you using the same program to open and play the AVI and MKV files that you were using when the thumbnails worked?

Edit: OK, I might have found the problem. Please read the following MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895561/en-us

Basically there is a problem in 64bit Vista running some 32bit dll's. Please read the article. Symptons (especially the last), Cause, and Workaround.

avi works via default windows. mkv requires haali media splitter and you need ot turn on manually the option for explorer intergration.

I think in 7 mkv works without this but in xp/vista you had to do it.

I always download CCCP and it has all the stuff in it that you need. However if you only want the Haali Media Spliter - Haali Media Splitter

Seems the fix was only temporary

Following those steps opens an explorer window, from there you need to open each and every folder/subfolder that contains a file you want a thumbnail for

I have a large video collection organized in many folders, and this would take too long
Also, changing the icon set, using IconPackager (which I do often) removed them all

    I have K-lite standard installed
Does anyone have a permanent fix I could try?

I found a way to get thumns for avi files
I had the standard K-Lite codec pack installed, then I went to their site and downloaded the 64-bit one. I installed this on top of the 32-bit version and Viola!! :D :D

I now have thumbs for avi files like I should

No luck with mpegs though :(

Do you normally use the K-lite codec pack?
If you don't installing it may cause its codecs to conflict with others you may have installed

After going back and reading your posts your most recent indicated that your videos won't even play at this time let alone a thumbnail issue. Is this correct?

If so, and you don't know what you have done to prevent the codecs from working or your videos from playing I think it is time for you to re-install Vista again and get your basic OS working once more before you proceed further.

It sounds like you are just getting deeper and deeper into problems without knowing what you have or have not done at this point.

    Hi there,
Forgive me if this is an insult to your computer knowledge (no insult intended) but... Have you tried right clicking your mouse and selecting 'View' and chosing 'Thumbnails'?

    ok try this:

1- Uninstall all codec and codecs packs you have installed
2- Use CCleaner (free) and perform a system and registry clean up. When you run CCleaner, under "Windows Explorer" section marked in blue colored text, make sure the box Thumbnail cache is selected.
    3- Restart your computer

4- Get Shark007 codec pack (get both version):
    32-bit: Shark007.net - Windows Vista Codec Package
    64-bit: Shark007.net - Windows 7 x64 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs

5- Install the 32-bit FIRST, then the 64-bit after.

6- Start > All Programs > Shark007 Codecs > Settings Application x64 (right-click and select "Run as administrator").

A panel will open, on it go to the Config tab, and click on the radio box named: "set 64-bit player". Now go to the Help tab, and click on the button Windows Filetype association. A dialog box will opem, clock on the Yes button.

Now close the panel, and restart your computer.

Now your problem should be solved.

Shark007 is a codec pack specially designed for Vista/Win7, where it doesn't conflict with Windows built-in codecs, provide full thumbnail support, you can play virtually any format, including 1080p MKV's, and teh 64-bit components allows you to use Windows Media Player 64-bit so that you can use teh 64-bit codec packs.

64-bit codecs are REQUIRED to get thumbnail support to work.

K-Lite and CCCP are designed exclusively for XP, and provide poor Vista/Win7 64-bit support.

Ok, Use Ccleaner (free), to perform a system clean. Make sure that the check box: "Thumbnail cache" is checked (under Windows Explorer).
    Once done, restart your computer.

If that fails, open Command Prompt (Start > type: cmd > rightclick on the result, and select "Run As Administrator"). The Command Prompt will open, on there, type: sfc /scannow and hit the Enter key. This will check your system for any corrupted system level files. When done, restart your computer.

If that still doesn't work, then you have something that is taking over.
Please make SURE that you DO NOT have:
    - 0 codec pack or codec installed, including DivX.
    - RealPlayer is not installed.
    - Any other player installed (VLC is fine).
