I guys, not sure if anyone here uses thunderbird but....

My university email is provided by gmail and I have a separate gmail accout so I like to have it all routed to Thunderbird, so here's my problem I have local folders in thunderbird as well as "gmail" folders. Whenever I delete messeges from the local folders, they have no effect on the gmail folders, which is expected, but when I delete messages from the gmail folder, all the deleted messages up being downloaded again.... It seems like I cannot delete gmail messages from the server from thunderbird. I am configured for IMAP as well....

Make sure you've set it up as recommended here (especially the "When I delete a message > Mark it as deleted" part).

I have.. it did not work. It basically copied all the marked messages to by local trash folder but left them on the gmail server. gosh this is annoying b/c I have about 3000 messages on the server...

I have Thunderburd and Gmail too. When I delete a Gmail message on Thunderbird it deletes it from the Gmail server (may have to hit refresh) . It does not move it to my local trash folder. Regardless, what difference would it make, I'm only using 5% of 7389 MB allowed (4800+ total messages) on the server.

Added: When deleted from Thunderbird the messages are deleted and not moved to the Gmail trash folder either even though Thunderbird is configured that way). Only when deleted from the web are they moved to trash (not locally of course)

you mentioned configured for IMAP... I use Thunderbird to access my Gmail aco using a POP server. Maybe that's part of the problem?
