those monsters...
though, there's a different message if you're using Chrome..
'Get rid of tarnished Chrome' -
Firefox with IE tab > IE lol

Sure, I will get *right at that*...$10K
NOT!
Thanks for sharing, though!

If you change Firefox's user agent(believe there's an addon to do it) you can get in with firefox. Easy.
-
The fine print says this is open to Australian residents aged 16 years and over only bummer...
Is Microsoft this desperate to get people to use IE8 over Firefox?
IMO it is not exactly a good idea that you have to use twitter to find the clues, I don't exactly care for those social "notworking" sites. They should use something more central like Microsoft Australia's website or some internet resource that is actually owned by Microsoft. -
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
Why is it so important to Microsoft for people to use IE it`s not like it`s locked to Msn or something, or do most people not change the default home page, and they Microsoft need to push their products.
-
Easier to keep an OS safe if you have people use a browser that works with your security features.
In Vista, only IE to date can use Protected Mode. Nice security feature. -
Yes because Internet Explorer is the most secure browser ever! NOT!. Your far better off using Firefox for security. Chrome also has a sort of protected mode, anyway.
-
The insecurity of IE is a misconception that is as outdated as IE6. If you're on Vista or Windows 7 and have not disabled UAC, IE7 and IE8 are more secure than Firefox and Opera, and as secure as Chrome, because the IE processes run in a sandbox, meaning that they can't touch the rest of your system. I don't quite comprehend why Firefox has refused to support this feature, given that Vista has been out for a really long time now.
Anyway, this contest is just some company promoting one of its products. Nothing to get particularly excited about. -
This just further enforces ...... IE FTW!
Super compatiblity + speed + best UI -
no
All the things they mention is balls.. and the video where the compare the browsers its probably true but we are talking about really little difference in speed.. i would never give up the way firefox can be customized, and the addons for a couple of miliseconds..
Seriously look at it.. pretty, oh so pretty =) -
I agree FF has many addons, but honestly speaking, I don't really require any of them, they are nice, but not required, try IE8 for a week and I promise you you will never go back to FF
-
^^ lol too FF biased. Chrome and it's minimalistic-sexiness is all you need. And if you don't like Chrome then sticking with IE is no problem. I don't understand the hype about add-ons. :S
-
You don't think i've used internet explorer, lol? I HIGHLY doubt a week will ever convert me to IE, mate. I will probably need to be waterboarded and brainwashed and spend a month in guantanamo bay before i'll use IE again.. There's simply no reason at all.. I mean, all these addons have grown essential to me..
-
D!tt0
Addons = N00b -
What? N00b... Dude you should stop using those expressions, it's hard to take you serious.. Now if i have to answer that idiotic statement, i'd say that it's the noobs who barely knows how to install addons or even knows they exist.. its the people that use IE who is the noobs.
-

If you need those addons, obvously, FF is the best. However, if you don't need those addons and just want a very minimal browser, something like lynx is fine. IE8 is somewhere in the middle.

AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
I always figured that sooner or later Microsoft would realize that the only way to get people to use IE would be to pay them to use it. -
Oh, but check out their oh-so-scientific checklist here. :GEEK:
-
That is a little stupid, and I say that as an IE lifer.
-
Thanks, but no. I'll keep my FF!
-
Well Microsoft, IE8 isn't supported for Ubuntu! So I have to use Firefox/Chrome instead of your superior Internet Explorer. Hah! Suckers....
-
(To subtly move away from another useless browser debate...)
Why is it that every post with the abbreviation "FF", I instinctively associate it with, "Final Fantasy"?
-
I still use IE7, but all I have to say is that this is a pretty dumb move from Microsoft as they are showing desperation.
They should have just used that 10 grand to further improve other products, like say...making Project Natal a reality? -
Firefox actually prevents the exploit.
-
Hmm, why did IE8 actually beat FF3 and Opera in a security comparison 1-2 months ago... IE8 was the safest browser - since then FF has seen a couple of updates - I think the 3.0.7 "chemspill" and is up to 3.0.11 now - but IE saw updates too.
While IE8 is pretty safe, IE7 isn't - between IE7 FF and Opera IE7 is the least secure.
Same here - there is one add-on in FF that I find useful - a download helper- but buggy Real Player can do that for IE8 too...
The only real reason to keep FF for me is to have a second browser to look at sites "logged out" - to check for example if I can send a link to someone.
Calvin - please not such language.
That IE isn't supported on Linux is obvious and a shame - obvious as its a proprietary MS prduct - a shame because itcould potentially increase the userbase.
About Chrome - Chrome in defaut is spyware...
(Until you switch all those reporting features and "enhancements" off...) -
10.000$ isn't that much for Microsoft - and while somewhere ín the way itsdone its unfair - its also one of those little things that - if you are happy - will make you a continued loyal customer.
-
How is having a promotion desperation? When you see an ad for a product on TV, does that also scream desperation to you?
Oh wow, I just saw a Colgate ad, gosh, they must be really desperate to be putting money into advertising.
It is fairly clever. Just look at this thread, people see it, the blogs pick it up within an hour of it going online, and it spreads. This is viral advertising at its best. Now people are looking at the promotion page, and the IE8 features comparison page, and are having discussions about it. This is publicity. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
and it shows that bad publicity is good publicity, the basic marketing rule
-
Why are they only targeting Australians for this? This would be a cool little contest worldwide...
-
The best safety feature of IE is its ability to be controlled by Group Policy. Being able to restrict users from changing options like setting up proxies, changing IE install options etc. makes it the SAFEST browser indeed.
-
Haha... check out this mock version of the IE8 checklist.
-
What language did he use, really?
Internet Explorer is pure crap compared to Chrome, Opera, and Firefox. Especially stuff like ActiveX. Bug/Security holes can be patched much quicker in Firefox and Chrome, due to the opensource nature as well. I suggest you look at what pixelot just linked
.
-
i honestly have used IE until recent;y when i got FIrefox. I noticed 2x the speed on the same connection, and i'll never go back
-
Why don't you post this in the Linux Forum?
-
Why should we take that link seriously again? Because it says near the top:
It doesn't seem so much a preamble to a well-articulated argument, so much as the depraved ranting of a Chrome cheerleader.
There are some people who are a bit slow, and continue to react to all versions of IE based on the impulses that they learned when the latest version was IE6, but posts like "IE is a piece of crap, use something else" hold no merit. They merely give evidence to the author's preference for kneejerk reactions and derogatory posts. Software changes over time, but some people just don't get it. -
It's called a sense of humor, which is added to by the fact that it's true.
-
Oooh, there we go
-
Browser fanboys fightining again, lol. And you people call console wars, mobile wars, OS wars stupid.
On topic, Firefox was never good to begin with, people just wanted to try something diffrent when it came out because Netscape was horrible. [And the only option was to use IE] - And many people grew to like FF and now defend it like it really would be a good browser. Same story with Opera and Safari. -
The day I start to argue and become bitter about someone else NOT using my web browser of choice, is the day I go outside and dig a whole for my head to go into. I mean seriously. It's. A. Web browser.
-
Firefox 3.5 + Adblock Plus + CustomizeGoogle is all I need.
-
I prefer IE8 over FF3. It's become my default browser, also MSN Toolbar and Silverlight are way cool. Oh and IE FTW.
-
LOL at the provocative remark. I agree that the fanboy stuff is pointless. My preferences run this way:
- Firefox
- Chrome
- Opera
- IE8
- Safari.
-
Ye Gods, man! What are you doing, posting reasonable thoughts on this thread! Without egoistic paranoia, there'd be nothing at all to post about!
Would that be a whole hole for your whole head?
-
So if IE is so great, then I must ask, what is wrong with Firefox?
-

CHrome ftw until the stupid developers realize we need smooth scrolling already. Opera for the meantime.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
That is actually true. IE is, like most Microsoft products (office f.e.) fully configurable in an active directory domain environment. That will make it for a long time choice nr. 1 for a lot of corporations.
I've heard of some tweak for Firefox that allows it to be group policy managed, too, but as it's not an official part of the product, it's not the same. That + updates trough Windows Update / WSUS.
It's the greatest browser for corporations. Nothing is as easy to manage.
But for home use, I stay with firefox
It's just so much more..

What does a product have to have something wrong for other product to succeed?
Some people just prefer not to use firefox for no reason. Also, some people are too lazy to mod firefox to make it look reasonable. They prefer to install IE8 so it looks good and match windows AERO theme. -
jackluo923 Notebook Virtuoso
And IE8 has that too. I believe firefox has it to as well and so does chrome.
Time to get rid of Firefox
