Im sure most of you know about this already but id like to remind everyone that updated to SP1 on how to regain 1-10gb of HD space by cleaning out the unneccessary left-over SP1 files.
NOTE: You only do this if you definately wanna stick with SP1 (which most people will). It will make SP1 permanent on your system
1) Type in vsp1cln.exe on your command prompt as administrator
2) It will prompt you if you wanna clean out the SP1 files, type Y for YES
3) It should take a few minutes to clean out the files.
Check your space now![]()

I assume this removes the uninstaller as well?
-
Yes, if youve had SP1 for weeks now and find it stable then its safe to do this
-
Cool. I'll run that on my Vista machine as soon as I'm done installing SP3 on this XP rig.
-
don't forget to run cmd as administrator. saves a bit of a headache. (or at least it did for me
)
-
Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
Thanks for reminding this again. I forgot to copy the instructions the first time it was first brought up.
-
flipfire--
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great reminder--went smooth as silk. -
upgrading to vista sp1 recovered around 12GB space in my C drive
i don't know how.
-
Same here - 10GB increase in free space
Have to admit that after few tweaks Vista can become even better than XP.
-
Thanks for the reminder. I had read about that before, but just couldn't remember where or what the command was.
Thanks again. -
me too i recovered about 10-12GB
-
For whatever reason I only recovered about .7GB. I clean up the hard disk and defrag once a week, I must have unknowingly already removed these files during one of my maintenance sessions.
-
flipfire, you should suggest this in the Vista Tweaks thread. It would be a good addition.
EDIT: Never mind, I just noticed that you have already done so. -
i can think of alot more tweaks that he doesnt have on his tweak thread. ;o
-
I tried it and I didn't get anything back.
I was able to recover space by deleting the hibernation file, deleting the contents of my temp folder and disabling system restore. I got back 8GB that way.

-
good tip... this should probably be added to Les' tips/tweaks thread
EDIT: oops i saw the post above -
Nice tweak! I will add it when I can get the time to stay for a bit! I will concede though this was brought to me earlier. I just hadn't got to it as it was so early compared to the release date.
-
thanks.. i had also recovered 0.7gb.. yeap i would have probably deleted the unwanted files myself...
-
I only recovered 1 gb...
-
yea.. only .8 gb... eh.. i was gonna stick with it anyway. Most of your "lost" memory is in shadow space and sys. restore. Half the ppl in this forum have an average of about 20gigs even tho their HD says full... check on how to limit the max... then you'll rele see some differences...
-
I gain 0 GB
but then... I'm installing MSDN Vista + SP1
-
Yeah I just ran this on 2 machines and got back .8GB on both.
-
Nice tweak. I recovered 1.6 GB of disk space on my m1330.
Edit: Also did it on my girlfriend's Sony SZ and she got back 0.8GB on her disk. -
I got 1.4GB. Thanks!

.1GB lol still space is space.
I run disk cleanup and cc cleaner ect once in awhile so I may have gotten most of it already before I ran this. -
Thanks flip - good luck on the Karate lessons.
-
thanks for the tweak! got back .89GB's of space back. thats actually pretty decent though. any space i get back will be put to good use!
-
I did not get anything back, but then again I constantly run CCleaner, RegMex, etc. Definitely a great tip for all those with SP1, thank you.
-
-
Ninjamod Says thank you!
-
Registry Mechanic. Well, if CCleaner would not do it and I have never the CMD before, why would it not get rid of anything?
-
I got 0.7 GB back from this. Better then nothing I guess. Thanks!
-
Just curious to know if there is something like this for XP as well?
-
Not as far as i know.. type vsp3cln.exe lol
-
I got about .6 GB back, which considering I've been working hard to keep at least 10 GB free on my internal, helps a bit
Hooray for 80 GB internal drives XD -
what if your notebook came with sp1 already installed by HP?
-
Yes you can still do this tweak it even if SP1 was integrated already. You wont get much back though
