I have 2 laptops: ASUS z70va and Hp dv1000t. Some internet streaming shows are recorded so low I canot hear them very well on either laptop. It is a particular episode not the whole show. I play it with Windows Media Player.

I also just started playing DVD's on the ASUS: "Curb Your Enthusiasm" 2 CD's of the first season. The volume there is so low I cannot hear it unless the laptop is almost on my face.

Does anyone have any idea how I might increase the volume beyond theusual volume controls? Is it possible that the DVD software that came with the ASUS is causing the problems with the DVDs ?

You can get external speakers with volume control. That's about all you can do I think. Some movies are just recorded at a lower volume than others. Notebook speakers don't get very loud for the most part either (assuming you are using your notebooks internal speakers).

Yeah, I was wondering if external speakers was my only recourse. I have been considering getting some portable ones for when I want to use the lap top for these purposes.

ANy recommendations? Though I should probably post that query in hardware forum.

I was able to go into the ASUS DVD software and select option for noisy environment...which they strongly recommond for laptop users. That increased the volume significantly but the sound quality isn't as good. I will just have to get speakers to go with this laptop as my old ones for the computer won't plug in and are not that great anyway.

    1. are you sure all your volume controls are 'up' ? there are about 3 places to check; the media player itself, the master volume control for windows and the 'wave' volume control.

    2. does this happen with other dvds or ANY other media (mp3s, other dvds)?

Do your headphones have their own seperate volume control? I had some trouble with this before. I had cranked my volume in the media player to the max. Then I maxed the main controls, but it was still too quite. Then I realized the volume control on the headphones was too low. :p That fixed it. lol

yeah, I put on my headsets, and had to crank them to the max to get it to sound low normal. Usually with htose headsets, I keep the volume on medium-low.

But that was a clever thought..... ;)

Yeah, I had checked the different places one normally looks to increase the volume... it was max everywhere.... and yes it wasn't just one DVD but all the DVD's I was playing: 3 from Curb Your Enthusiasm and 3 from Sex and the City.

I can't answer re: MP3 b/c even though I have had an iRiver MP3 player for nearly a year... I have not had time yet to figure it out....

I think the ASUSDVD player was the cause... I am going to try another DVD player when I get time to monkey around.
