... and they all want to perform some of the same functions. What do I need, what can I get riid of?
Real Player
Windows Media Player 10
iTunes
Quicktime
Creative
PowerDVD
It seems some web content likes one program over another but I was thinking of atleast getting rid of Creative, iTunes and PowerDVD. Also do I need to keep Real Player?
I like WMP 10, what's 11 have that 10 doesn't? Should I upgrade?

What types of files do you play? I use winamp, VLC and real alternative for realplayer files. It's just personal preference.
VLC will play almost anything you throw at it. -
Music (cd's, .mp3 and .wma) and videos (DVD's) mostly and whatever the web throws at me.

I'd say you can dump Real Player, the rest have their own uses. Creative also doesn't seem important. I would also get rid of iTunse, I use wmp for music but that's just personal preference.
Quicktime is useful as a plugin and for films in quicktime format but it doesn't have to startup on windows start. I'd say the others are worth keeping. -
VLC+Media Player Clasic+Foobar, three programs to handle them all
-
ill second the winamp-vlc-real combo

I use Media player classic for any videos that I have. I use Itunes for my music since it works with my iPod.

You will need the original QT plugin from Apple to run itunes. I tried AT Alternative on my friends NB and itunes failed to load with a required QT error.
In response, MPC+CCCP+QT Alternative+RP Alternative. -
I think all it comes down to is personal preference, everyone will have a different view on what is best for their computer. I don't see anything wrong with keeping all the programs though and just using the appropriate one for the right file type.

I use WMP 10, VLC and Power DVD combo. WMP for music, VLC for video files, Power DVD for DVDs (duh lol)

you can keep all of the players, just make sure that you set the MIME-type handling properly. basically, make sure real player only handles realmovies, WMP handles wmv, mpeg and avi (since it's quickest to load,) and that quicktime handles mov files.
You just have to give realplayer the smackdown to keep it from loading all sorts of garbage into your tray and whatever other BS they do. -
Media Player Classic can replace Quicktime and Real Player, using the freeware drivers called RealAlternative and QuicktimeAlternative.
The Zoomplayer or GomPlayer can play all other videos.
Itunes is bloat. You can replace for audio files with Foobar or Musikcube and you are done.
Too many players....
