I have 70 processes @ startup on Vista, wondering if there are any useless processes that I can get rid of to speed up boot times?
-
Hard to say if we don't have any names.
-
If it was my computer, I would remove a lot of processes
Do you scan sometimes with Antispyware software? -
-
You should run both Ad-aware ( www.lavasoftusa.com/) and Spybot S&D ( http://www.safer-networking.org/)
That way, you will be sure, before starting, that you don't have spyware/adware in the list. -
What processes ywoudl you recoomend I get rid of? -
First you should expand the "description" column to have an idea of the goal of each process and then you can type the name of the process in Google if you have any doubts. Don't remove everything at the same time.
Remove some, then reboot and be sure everything is OK before removing other processes. -

I use CCleaner to get rid of certain startup programs. You might want to get that a try (as opposed to using MSCONFIG).

Just download spybot Once installed select advance mode and tools and then system startup. Here you'll be able to disable startup programs.

I have a question, every time I turn my comp on and every boots up fine but I get that annoying "windows has blocked programs from starting" prompt. Is there any way of getting rid of that?
-
I have the minimum and I have 72.
-
I normally have around 45 processes at startup. Is that a good number?
-
Any number is good as long as it's running what you want, and not running things you don't want.
Also, some programs use many times more resources than others, and some provide much more benefit than others as well, so just counting the number of startup programs isn't too useful. It's kind of like counting the number of bills in my pocket, without paying any attention to which ones are $1 bills and which are $20 bills. -
-
Any ideas on how I can get rid of that annoying prompt?
-
I thought my 52 was too high.

My desktop and laptop are at about 33 each on startup. I know if Media Center is run, even once, it will add several new tasks to startup. I have no doubt there are other apps that will do the same.
Those screencaps were also pretty bad. You know you can adjust the size of the columns right? -
-
EDIT: It is shown in this link. Just tick the box and press OK to the prompt. -
Google for "speed up windows vista" and you'll come across a number of sites with lists of services that can be disabled, turned to manual etc. to speed up the startup process.
I found a number of good sites, can't remember them off-hand though, but I have my processes down to 40 on idle when the desktop appears on startup, XP on the other hand only has 19... -

I get around 50 normally and 43/44 with most things closed before gaming; which I thought was decent for Vista. I think getting rid of the main un-needed programs made most of the difference. Any little thing I disable now seems to make little difference. It definately made a difference going from around 60-70 when I first got the laptop though. -
I have 32 when just browsing the internet and having steam open
how can people have 70?Attached Files:

Is there anyway to know what processes i can stop and which are important so i can disable some?
and will disabling them give me a noticeable proformance boost? -
follow this Link.
it gives u the list of default vista services. you can tweak them as u like. it helped reduce the no of unwanted programs and services i have. Now, i have 44 process at startup (including AV and 3rd party firewall)..
having disabled some processes definitely shows some/little increased performance. it also helps in reducing startup times. -
-
I appear to be consistently at 47 processes.
