Sometimes when I download things from torrent sites they include, for example, a video (.avi .mpeg whatever). But in addition to this there are odd files that download too. "trackers". I unselect these items but I wonder why they exist? Are they really tracking?

The file(s) that you are talking about are just messages that tell you where the torrent was tracked from. If you are annoyed by these benign files, you can tell your torrent program to not download them when you queue up a torrent.

they are not necessarily useless...these "trackers" are used for private torrent sites that monitor your up/downloads...the more you leech (download), the more they want you to seed (upload)..dont seed enough, then you will be a leech, and get banned from the site. they know how much you up/download by using these trackers to report to them, and usually on your profile page it will tell which torrents you are uploading, which you are downloading, and what your file share ratio is..less then 1.00 you better upload more..more then that..you are good. (.98 for instance will mean that you download .02 more then you uploaded...in terms of GB)
so yes, worthless if your using a public torrent site...essential if your using a private torrent site.
