Is it possible for me to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop using usb cables? I'm planning to order a external HDD, but in case it doesn't arrive in time I want to have a backup plan to use before Thanksgiving break ends. My desktop uses Windows XP MCE and my laptop uses Vista Business 64bit.

I heard theres something I can do with Ethernet cables, anything to that? I really am just looking for a way to transfer files without having to buy new cords or software.

Yes, using Windows Easy Transfer. It's included in Windows Vista:

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/96d5d811-6d52-4dff-b39b-76c64a131dfe1033.mspx

You can transfer through a network through a router (wired or wireless), USB flash drive/Hard drive, or via DVD's

You can even transfer whole user accounts.

    good luck :)
