Did a clean install, runs faster and recognizes more RAM. Won't let me play C&C 3. Did another clean install of Vista x32. I'll be using Vista x32 from now on due to program incompatability. Can anyone tell me if Microsoft will put out an update to allow Vista x32 to recognize 4GB of RAM?

CNC 3 works on Vista 64-bit after patching to the latest version.

No there is no way it will ever read all 4gb on 32bit. I suggest you stay in 32bit. Did you even bother checking if CnC3 was x64 compatible?

No, but after I removed my head from my $%# and did some research I found that some of the older games that my boys and I play over our network don't like x64. It really doesnt matter, I enjoy testing out things on my computer for myself. So no harm done, just some time lost.

Yeah. This post tells me nothing. The OP mentions that he could not play one game and then says that there are all these incompatibilities. What are the other incompatibilities? Judging solely on what is in this post (what else is there), it looks like the OP just tried that one game, couldn't play it, and then decided that Vista X64 was not worth it. Some more information about the other incompatibilities is necessary for the the issue to be validated, IMHO.

Well...and actually....a subsequent post told OP that the latest update to that game makes it fully compatable with x64...

Relax, I'm simply saying that it's not for me. My boys and I play all the older C&C games together over our network. No where did I say there were a bunch of incompatabilities. I don't need to validate crap, I wasn't saying x64 isn't worth it. I think it is worth it and when my sons and I get tired of the older games, I will move up to x64. As for me, enjoying older games with my 12 and 14 year old boys are much more important than x64. I did not mean to send some of you over the edge. If I thought it would help I'd throw you a rope.
I found absolutely no problems with drivers, everything on my system worked perfectly. System Mechanic isn't compatible and some older games. I was mistaken about C&C3, but I couldn't get it to patch. I hope I cleared some things up.

Vista X86 with SP1 recognizes 4gb...but it still will not utilize it. It shows in sys properties as 4gb, but on task manager and bios it still says 3gb. So basically...same as before, cos 32bit will not utilize 4gb. but if you have DDR ram its kind of better to have 2 sticks of the same ram vs. 1gb+2gb imo.

If you want 4GB of RAM get x64. Anyway, that's not the real point here. The point is that you can make it work. Sure, some games may not play by default, but after updating who knows... I had a similar problem with Max Payne on XP SP2 and after some update it worked (if I recall correctly).

Unfortunately EA isn't giving much support to C&C First Decade and no current update to play on x64. I know I could dual boot and did for a while, but I'm happy where I'm at and will look at it again later. My computer runs great as it is and as I stated I'd rather play the old games with my boys. I really liked x64 otherwise and as time passes it should only get better. As I stated before, It's not for me at the present time.

I don't think you sent anyone "over the edge." You posted something and people responded to it. That's usually what happens in forums. ;) If 32-bit works better for you and the people on your network, then stick with that. There may be a real need in the foreseeable future to make the jump to x64. Just keep that in mind if, or most likely when, that time comes.

That's my point. I like x64 better, but for now x32 works for me. As soon as it's feasable I will upgrade. I wasn't trying to say x64 was no good.

There will never be an update that will allow 32-bit Vista (or XP) to use 4 gb of RAM, due to technical limitations. As mentioned, Vista SP1 will technically "recognize" 4gb, as in it will display the fact that 4 gb is installed, but it still won't be able to do anything with that extra RAM.

CnC3 works for me on Vista X64. I think it's using Securom and securom really sucks on X64. I'm using a no-cd patch and no problems.

I played at my friend's house. He was using his XP 32 destop and everything. Me and he as the host...

I'm glad to hear that C&C3 works on x64... early owners of the game reported otherwise, and I'm currently working on upgrading to Vista x64.

No, it doesn't. Your impression of the world is wrong, and you are making assumptions about things that you don't know about.

Any 64-bit operating system, not just Vista, will require more memory for the same tasks than its 32-bit counterpart due to longer memory addresses.

Theoretically I am not sure about that, but practically it doesn't make any difference. That part about 850MB for a single open window is clearly bull****.

What the **** are you talking about?

My notebook has been running for about 8 days now, downloading things 24/7, playing UT2004, Call of Duty 4, running Opera with hundreds upon hundreds of tabs, with flash and videos and what not (damn these football websites), with Windows Live Messenger, Winamp, Nokia PC Suite, and all sorts of anti-****ware softwares in the background, I''ve updated Windows as well, some SilverLight or something, while using IE 7 for GMail 24/7, installed and removed SRS demo and DFX demo and tried a new registry cleaner for x64, and then removed it, burnt all the 6 seasons of The Sopranos in 720p on 10s of DVDs, then split and burnt a 21GB version of Gladiator on 3 DL DVDs among normal things, and now still, my RAM usage is at 31%, 1.22 GB to be exact, and this is after 3 months of a fresh install.

    Thanks!
