So I have a friend who had a virus on his computer and he used StopZilla to remove it, that didn't work so he used Norton.

A day or two later a message popped up saying that a virus was removed and the comp needed to restart so he restarted the system.

When he restarted the computer gave him a black screen and so he did a restore of the last known good config and the same thing showed up when he restarted.

So now the BSOD shows up but none of the options work so it restarts continually going from a blue screen to the black screen.

Any ideas? Is a reformat an option at this point? I have not had a chance to look at the computer yet so I don't know if safe mode works or not but he said all the options from the BSOD don't work so I really don't know.

There is no where near enough information in your post for anyone to hazard a guess.

No OS listed? No BSOD error listed? Blue or Black screen, which is it? What virus was cleaned?

I mean, come on...that's like saying, "My car won't start, can any one help?"

If it's Vista or Win7 use a install dvd and run startup repair--other than that, we do not have enough information...

I mentioned that this was my friends computer, and that I didn't have a chance to look at the system yet myself so understand that the information that I provided was a vague description of the problem.

I'm not looking for the exact answer, I posted that I was just seeing if a reformat is a possibility with BSOD.

Thanks for the tip if it's windows 7, do you have a tip if it's xp, the second most popular MS OS out there?

At best, you will only get something close to a vague answer. My advice would be to find some time and take a look at the computer, so you can come back here with more than little information, so we have a better understanding what the problem might be.

If it were XP, I would take the harddrive out, drop it in another machine (or boot with something like a bartpe, vistape, or linux boto disk), take possession of the system volume information folder, extract an old restore point from it and place the files in the appropriate folders after renaming them to the right file name, drop the drive back in the machine and be back up and running in 20 minutes.

    Thanks for the ideas!

I think I will try this when he brings his system over. I'm pretty sure that it's XP since he didn't buy the comp within the last year and he never mentioned to me about having a 7 upgrade.

I know, I hate not having a better grip on what the issue's are, even a line of code would be helpful, so he's going to be bring his system over and I'll message back if it's as bad as he describes but with more detail for you guys to understand what I'm going to be dealing with.
