    Oh my...

I wanted to do a clean install on my Lenovo T61 tonight as I had done in the past.

Got all my drivers together, put the Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade DVD into the DVD bay and reset the computer. I didn't enter my product key as I was planning to enter it after vista had installed as per Stallen's Clean Install thread on the Lenovo boards. As windows started to install, it seemed to hang, and then popped up with an error message:

"Can not find the files needed for install. Error # 0x80070017" Or something to that effect. The error # is the correct one.

Anyway, it appears that my Anytime Upgrade DVD will not work for what ever reason. The DVD does appear somewhat scratched so I guess that could be the problem. Or maybe the CD Drive. Anyway.. What in the world do I do now? I put my backup CDs in and they don't even work... And now I find they no longer make Anytime Upgrade DVDs!!Oh no..

Should I call Lenovo? What should I do? I'm FREEKIN out man!!

    Can someone please .. help?

Doesnt the anytime upgrade dvd UPGRADE the system? Which translates into you cannot do a clean install from it, rather then do an upgrade of an existing vista/xp installation?

The Vista Anytime Upgrade DVD was a limited time DVD offer that came with new computers and was also avaliable for purchase online for a short period of time.

It actually contained full versions of all of the Vista offerings (home/premium/business, etc.). It is able to be used to do a clean install. I've done it before, so that is not the issue. There is a tutorial on how to perform this clean install using the anytime upgrade CD on the Lenovo forums. You can read it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144783

Like I said, thats not the issue.

Anyway I was able to get the recovery CDs loaded so now I'm back to a stock machine with bloat ware. BLAH.

What if you tried running the install from a USB key?

I found my recovery discs and uploaded those. Spent some more time on notebookreview.com and found out I could use Win 7 for 120 days free and and at some point use my student email address to get a hefty discount on Win 7 professional. Works for me - I'm running Win 7 x64 now. Time to get back to starcraft II :)
