    Hi all.
I'm in the process of trying to rescue my laptop hdd. It is a bootable disk with true crypt.
My laptop hdd reports to have massive problems (don't know exactly what) but I was thinking of hooking it up to my stationary and make an image file.
then mount the image file and make truecrypt decipher it.

The problem is that I don't know if it is possible.
first I would need a program that reads bit by bit my hdd (since I cant boot it) and make an imagefile. then I need truecrypt to somehow decipher it (suggestions on how to do that is also valuable.

I cant use linux since I have a HW bug in my ata controller that makes my my disk soft reset and not behave rationally without a kernel recompile (which I don't know how to do).

Happy for suggestions. It does not have to be freeware.

Thanks for making this forum great!

If the HDD is on its way out, te image you make will still contain the corrupted data and you may not be able to decrypt it properly. You can make the image, most imaging utilities allow you to do a bit by bit clone. However, two scenarios are very likely.

    1) The data is already FUBAR, so making an image will do nothing.
    2) Your HDD is dying and any use of it will just damage the data further which is likely to make the whole thing unrecoverable.

I hope you had backups. You may be able to get some of your data back, but if you can't access the drive itself from another computer (whether through an enclosure or connected in a desktop), then you can forget about recovering anything.

Macrium and Clonezilla can do the cloning for you.
