I'm running Vista x64. How safe is it to use truecrypt for the OS partition and my other partition?

I have client information I would like to keep secure, but I also use my Asus notebook to game when I LAN with my buddy and sometimes when I am bored.

Is this a good or bad idea?

How does it compare to the built in encryption I can enable with Vista Ultimate? Would I still get a performance hit with TrueCrypt?
