    Hey all.

I've been trying to find an AVI codec so WMP or something can play them, but I'm not having much luck..

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advanced!

    :)

Are you sure there not Divx vids?

Otherwise I see no reason that WMP can't play avi files.

    Just download DivX from here.

If you want to update your WMP, download the latest version Windows Media Player 11 here.

Yeah, everyone's suggestions are good, but it would be easier if you knew what codec you needed. AVI files are just audio/video container files. Within them is audio and video information. The problem is there are actually thousands of different audio and video codecs that can be used within an AVI file. Fortunately, only a few dozen are really common, so a codec pack like the one's others linked you to will likely do the trick. Personally, I don't care for the massive codec packs and only want to install the few codecs I need, but to each his own.

Also, if you want to avoid downloading codecs all together, just grab VLC Media Player. It has its own codecs for just about any media format you can throw at it.

I agreed with jadedraverla. VLC Media Player is the way to go. You won't need to install codecs because it's got just about every one you could ever think of built in.

If you want to know EXACTLY which codec you need for a specific filethough, download GSpot. Pardon the name, but that's what it is. Anyhow, this program identifies the codec needed for any specific file. Then it's as simple as googling the result and downloading it.

yah ive had the same problem. What i did was:

i ripped a DVD and saved it to my computer. I ripped it as an AVI file. There were a couple of AVI files that made the whole movie. I try to play in in WMP, and it dosent work (and yes i also tried DivX and the same thing happened). This is wat it said when i tried playing it on WMP:

"WMP encountered a promble, blah blah blah. it told me to go here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/wi...&id=C00D11B1&contextid=83&originalid=80040154

I have the newest version of WMP installed, and i just recently installed it. Any help? What codec thingy do i need?

    thanks.

The iPod video only suports H.264 and MPEG-4 video formats. Convert your files to them and they will play just fine.

WMP is useless for me. Won't play anything, inc DVDs except for WMV files  VLC or MPC with K-Lite Mega Codec pack as well for me. Much less hassle and haven't had to think about codecs and whatnot ever again

o yah, i have another question

the movies seem to be small when i play them in full screen, they are only a square and do not fill up my widescreen display. Also, the video seems to be stretched so the people look like they are skinny. Do you know how to make this widescreen on WMP?

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm

This is only the real codec pack that works, It covers all file formats you would need, and you can use one program, Media Player Classic, that covers Quick Time, AVI and so on.

Index Entries sounds like a driver problem. The Codec Pack might not have installed itself properly. Reinstall or uninstall and download MPC from the link above.

Its probably because the resolution is quite small, running in 720i PAL format (720×576). And on a much higher resolution screen, the image looks small.
