    Trying to share a folder from Windows Server 2008 R2 desktop to Windows 7 Laptop

    Hi guys,

    I'm trying to setup a shared folder containing my documents on a desktop with Windows Server 2008 R2 so that my laptop(s) running Windows 7 can access them. The problem I'm having is that unless I explicitly allow authenticated users or everyone full read/write access to the folder, then I get denied access to the folder from the laptops (it doesn't even ask me to supply a username/password).

    I setup a few user accounts with admin rights on the server (all of which have read/write access to the folder), enabled password protected folder sharing, and all of the security and permissions on the folder are set to allow users from the admin group in. Despite this it's still failing to connect. The machines are on the same workgroup.

    [edit] OK, so If I put my username in the Admin group, then specify the Admin group as having R/W access to the folder, it doesn't work. If I put my username directly into the R/W access list for the shared folder, it works. So it doesn't seem to like using the Groups to specify permissions. But I am still having issues with it not asking for credentials, just instantly denying any user request to the folder if the username is not on the list. [/edit]

    Permissions and group policies can be a pain - even if you've dedicated hours to a class that strictly focuses on teaching how to assign and properly manage them.
