Bare with me guys - I'm trying to get my system sorted out.

I bought my Thinkpad t60 with Windows XP SP2 installed. I have a COA for the system - Lenovo places them underneath the computer.

However, I was trying to do a clean reinstall and with a Windows XP SP2 CD. When I tried to enter my legit serial number, it wouldn't accept it. It kept saying the key was invalid - when in fact I know this key is mine and unique.

So, in my desperation, I just entered a leaked (illegal) serial key. I had no choice at the time, and I figured I would get back online because I know there were ways to change it.

Now, I'm trying to switch this 'cracked' Windows serial key into my real, unique serial number. I can still access Windows Update, etc - but that's not the point - the point is I paid for Windows XP and I want to use the real serial on my computer.

So, can anyone direct me as to how I can switch the serial numbers in Windows? I know there's a way to do it :)

    thanks,
    Sean

I had the same problem. For some reason the key on the computer is different from the key on the sticker. Does anyone know why it's like this? I checked for 3 of my laptops which I bought new online.

As far as I remember, you should call microsoft, explain the problem you had formatting your laptop, and they will ask you for the serial key underneath your computer, and they will give the correct serial to activate your copy again.

The computer comes preloaded with Windows, and that key is required to be affixed to the computer. However, that key is an OEM key and will not work with retail versions.

Usually the computer is shipped with a restore disk, or an OS install disk that does not require a key during installation.
