I'm thinking I want to try out windows 10 just to give it a try and see how it performs. I don't want to use any of my precious win7 keys or do any upgrades, just a fresh install. What are my options for downloading a trial version of win10? Insider program?

you can use the media creation tool and do a fresh install...you don't need to enter a key in at install to use the OS. i would only put the key in if i was satisfied with the OS and even then you have 30 days to revert.

If (by chance) it's on a machine with windows bios key, if installing the same w version (home, pro) it should activate automatically (at least that's how it behaves here). Am using a fresh install on a dedicated hd (ssd actually) for w10 testing, to avoid any possible interaction with the original os install.

Ok, but where do I download the .iso?
(If I'm understanding this correct, I either have to join MS Insider program, or punch in my win7 key on the microsoft site to get access to the win10 iso?)

You can use your Win 7 Pro key right away to install Windows 10 as of build 10586, no need to go through the buggy upgrade path.

all you need is here, it is a sticky for a reason so all can see it, a lot of work and hours has been spent towards making this guide, yet you ignore it:

I didn't ignore it, I just didn't need it until now. :vbtongue:
But your guide did answer my main question about where I'm downloading the iso from, so thank you.

what i suggest is you install macrium reflect and take an image of your win 7 install and save it on a separate drive. then wipe and install win 10. if anything that bugs you with win 10 you can simply restore your backup.
