    Hey there, it's me again.

I was just wondering if there was a way to turn off the Touch Pad on my Dell XPS 1530. My finger brushes it when I type, and the mouse jumps to somewhere random, causing random text to be inserted into the wrong place. It has happened a few times just writing this.

So if anyone knows how, I would be very grateful!

    Thanks!

Um. disable it via Device Manager? It's a hassle to go into there everytime but that should solve the issue.

You can look into devcon command line to enable and disable the touchpad to create a shortcut or something if you want a technical challenge :D

For even more a greater challenge, after you figure out the command line, you can try to hot key one of the media buttons or keyboard strokes to enable and disable the touchpad. Probably too much work though lol...

There should be an icon in the taskbar that controls it, you can change your settings there.

Hmmmm, I can't seem to find an icon. Is there a way to get that on the taskbar?

I know, but it is not on the bar. I probably removed it back in the day. Is there any way to get that back?

Reinstall it (get the software from Dell.com) or from your CD.

Go to msconfig > startup from windows orb > run, and see if you find a "Alps pointing-device driver" and see if its checked.. else check it and restart the system and then see if you can see the icon... *holy see.... I used to many see there, you see??* ;) :D :p

If the XPS 1530 is anything like the Inspiron 1520, you should be able to go to Control Panel --> Classic View --> Mouse, and then have a Dell Touchpad tab therein from which you can disable it. The "Device Select" section within Dell Touchpad will allow you to turn it off. If the Dell Touchpad section isn't there, you might not have the touchpad drivers installed.

Note that if you have the touchpad off and don't have a mouse, it is very difficult to turn it back on, leaving you pretty much with a keyboard-only computer until you get a mouse. If you're not used to touchpads, you might be better leaving it on for this reason. With time the frequency of accidentally jarring the pointer with the touchpad decreases markedly.
