I recently installed Vista on my Dell Inpiron 6400 but the screen does not turn off when I close the lid. I don't want it to go into sleep mode, but just to turn off the screen whenever I close the lid. Does anyone know how I can do this?

    Thanks

If the screen is closed, how do you know?

That happened to me too. Normaly the screen would turn off before it was totaly closed. Like still a gap of 10cm or so. I liked it since i could just close the laptop 3/4 of the way and it would turn of the screen and I assume save alot of battery. Under Vista it didnt work.
It got fixed when I installed the hot keys that control volume and screen brightness. I think it also installed new ACPI drivers. Have a look if there is anything for your laptop like that.

This must be a driver issue, as Wave said. Typically this is a hardware function that detects the LCD position. My MSI was having a problem of not turning the screen off, and it has XP. I could tell because the rectangular cutout on the lid was still lit.

I found that this happened when I carried it sideways more often...like in a backpack. Something would disconnect every now and then and cause the LCD switch not to activate. Now that I am done with school it sits flat most of the time, and I don't see the problem as much.

It think you need to install the ACPI drivers. It is the part responsible for detecting the Lid status.
Also make sure you have the proper settings in the power options.

Think you'd get more assistance in the Dell subforum.
