In laptops the biggest battery eater is by far the monitor, and often when using battery, I know I will be AFK for 10 minutes, I would rather turn the monitor off during that period.
The power options can both dim the screen and turn it off, so there must be some way to set up a shortcut/macro to do the same, and then turn the screen back on when a button/mouse is touched.
Any ideas on how to make this work? Would help a lot with battery life!

On Thinkpads, you can set the Fn + F3 (or End on some Thinkpads) key combination to turn off the monitor.
For other laptops, a great workaround is this. -
Great utility. I see they have other possibilities, like toggling mute.
Thanks so much. -
Fn + F7 on Asus laptops, check your F keys for an icon with a monitor with a x inside,it usually means turn off monitor. You may or may not have onethough.

I used to use nircmd, but somehow after calling it to turn off monitor couple times, nircmd.exe remain in the process, causing multiple nircmd.exe running on the background.
For now, I use this, using the three finger press on touchpad and trigger it.

I would prefer to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on notebook hinges, I remember the horror story's of a few years ago, I hope it does not happen any more.

You could change your power save mode to custom mode and determine when to turn off the LCD when not in use? Have you tried that power mode feature?? Also when you mean eat battery is your laptop plugged in or away from a power source? -
Yeah, this is a great one. I used it before on my Averatec
