    Do you always have them on or turn it on as needed?

    I would at least have one active scan running with your machine. It cuts down the risk of infection, and a little slowdown is definately worth it.

    Why on earth would you want to turn them off?!

    Most Anti-Virus run schelduled scans so I'd keep them on.

    yes, it does not make sense to install an antivirus app on your computer and then leave it off. what would be the point of installing it then?
