I'm about to put Windows 7 on this laptop. The first thing I always did after formating and reinstalling Vista would be to disable UAC completely.
I've heard that the UAC is supposedly better on Windows 7? I do a lot of gaming, modding, moving of files, etc etc on this thing and I don't want to have issues with files being put in non-standard locations like what UAC does in Vista (i.e. modding in Oblivion is a pain if you have UAC on)
So has it been improved or should I immediately disable it like I did with Vista upon reinstall? I use the best anti-virus, so I wonder if there's any benefit with 7's UAC?

If you are ok with it, then just disable it.
Another alternative is to just hardlink the modding directories to folders outside Program Files. That way you can keep UAC on, but not have to deal with UAC prompts when modifying files inside Program Files. -
So there is no downside or impact to disabling UAC completely? I was just searching on google and I read something about sidebar and desktop gadgets and themes not working with UAC disabled?
-
I haven't heard that. But ya, there isn't a large downside to it outside of security.

The first thing I did in Vista was disable UAC aswell.
Recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, and UAC has been on since.
I barely get any notifications compared to Vista. There are very few here and there, but for the most part, I have barely had any. -
EDIT: Oh right, UAC on Windows 7 ships with a slightly lower security standard which I increased anyways. -
ONLY downside is that the "security" of UAC is gone.

now i tried to write my post 3 times, and each time i wasn't able to post it.
leave it on and TRY IT OUT before judging it based on hearsay of the internet. the internet tells you, too, that you explode drinking coke + mentos. -

I don't know why people shut off UAC unless they're technicians.
It doesn't come up that often for most of the tasks you are performing and it is there to protect you from Malware. -
Leave it on I say (at least just move the slider down)
And if you have a finger-print reader anyway, how long does it take just to swipe your finger? I prefer the relaxed feeling with it on, rather than that vaguely unsettling feeling that maybe something 'got in'. -
