I bought a new HP Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Basic (SP1), 2 days ago.

Today I set out to create the recovery disks which they recommend to do before you start to use your system. I followed instructions, started the program. It showed a progress bar moving quite slowly. Meanwhile there was a pop-up from Windows Update manager asking to restart the system, or that it would in the next 4 minutes.(I was disconnected from the Internet, but probably this happened cos of connecting to the Net the first 2 days). I postponed the restart, but mistakenly did not reset the interval between the next such prompt.
I had to leave my PC while the Recovery Manager created my factory defaults image. I was expecting to see a prompt from Recovery Manager asking to insert the DVD/CD, instead I only saw my system login screen. Meaning, my system had restarted because of the "Win Update" prompt!!!

I resumed the process, by again going to Recovery Manager, but this time it simply asked me to insert the disk. I inserted my 4.7GB DVD, and it took around 25 minutes to write to this. It then asked me to insert the next disk, which I did, but it immediately ejected with a window saying your recovery disks have been successfully created.

Another thing I noticed is, the Recovery Partition which was already created when I bought the laptop, had shown around 75 % full, which after all this now shows a whole 9.47 GB free of 10.5 GB, meaning its only a little more than 1 GB full?!?

I am at a loss trying to understand if this is normal. I am more worried about my recovery partition now showing so less used space.

    Can anyone please help???

Easiest thing to do is call HP and tell them that the recovery disc program didn't work. They will send you a free set of recovery discs.

    Thanks a lot for replying.
Yes, I am thinking of visiting the tech support guys for HP laptops at the dealers.
But, am still worried why my recovery partition shows so less used space. Is that normal? If HP gives 2 options to do a recovery, either from a disc or from the recovery partition (by pressing f11 etc), then how come after my recovery disc creation fiasco, my recovery partition size got reduced? I want to know if thats a normal thing.
I just cant think that all my OS files etc would only come to around 1GB on the partition????

Did you try your recovery disc to see if it works? Recovery partition doesn't usually change in size after a burned recovery disc. You can order from HP but be forewarned.. if you change any original hardwares the recovery discs won't work. It has to be the same config when you bought it.
