    USB booting -- is it possible?

    I couldn't find a suitable forum for this, so bear with me. Is it possible to boot a laptop from a USB source, such as external CD, flash disk, HDD, etc?

    Yes. Your laptop must support booting from USB, and you need to have the drive formatted correctly.

    whether you can on your hardware, who knows?

    it's hard to pinpoint your exact make/model with all the technical specs you provided in your post.

    Ah. I don't have anything as of yet, but I've put an order for a Dell XPS 1330. I take it with a machine as recent as this, it should be feasible, no?

    Most new PCs will. Just set the BIOS for it.
