    hi
I have an Alienware 15 R3. So far I have established that the port on the right (USB 3) works fine at transferring data. The port on the left (also USB 3 but with charging ability) is inconsistent. Will disconnect the USB drive attached and transfer speeds are very haphazard, usually settling at very very low speeds by comparison to the right port.

The port on the back of the machine is thunderbolt I believe. This too shows the same sort of behaviour as the left port (that is to say, inconsistent).

    Things I have tried:
    - turned off USB sleep in power settings
    - turned off power management USB power saving (device management, right click USB device and then going to power management tab)
    - uninstalling all system volumes and USB input devices and restarting windows.

Am I missing something? The ports work but are unreliable compared to the one on the right.

    I have windows 10 home.

    Thanks

Is this O/S the O/S it came with? And did you make sure the drivers are the correct version?

Thanks for responding. Yes it is the same OS. I haven't reinstalled Windows. Drivers are up to "Dell support" date. What driver dictates USB support?

USB3.0 drivers should be in Windows 10 itself. That being said, you can go look for the Windows 10 drivers for your Intel chipset, they may have a newer version. You can also try running Windows update and see if it comes up with a driver for it.

Tried the windows way. Didn't come up with anything. Now established that only the USB port on the left is patchy and unstable. The one on the right and the two USB c work fine. Is there a USB legacy support I should switch off? Can't find that in the bios
