They work fine if connected directly to a usb or audio port but give a "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" when connected through a usb hub. The speakers are some old Yamaha yst-md35d.

You need a powered hub. The hub you are using can't provide enough current.

strictly speaking, there is no such thing as usb speakers.

there are usb audio adapters that are integrated into a set of speakers though.

There are also speakers that need to be plugged into a machines conventional (analog) audio-out speakers port and the usb part is just to pull power (limited to 500ma on USB v2) from a convenient USB port to run an internal amplifier.

    Which do you have?

Knowing that discrimination, you see that the usb audio adapter variant will most likely need drivers to run on any given machine.

If your speakers are the kind that pull power from a usb port to run an internal amp, then they will have to be plugged into the audio/speaker out port for signal and the usb port for amplifier power.
