I got a Dell Inspiron 545 desktop and upgraded its OS from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium on Monday. But after everything is done and dusted with all the updates and checks, most of my programmes won't connect to the internet except for three: Internet Explorer (64-bit), Skype and Google Chrome.
And BTW, the normal Internet Explorer doesn't work. Same for - Google Talk, Steam, Firefox (even though I upgraded it to Firefox 3 by downloading the installer from Chrome.) etc.
I am using an internet provided by my university, so today I contacted them and they said it shouldn't be a problem at their end since I was able to connect to the internet in Vista.
I have upgraded most of the drivers as well and the problem still exist, which makes me wonder if this is a problem regarding to my internet settings. And this is where I need the help from you guys, since I am not exactly a computer guru.![]()
Thanks.

See if you can get IE 32bit to work by doing the following:
Go into control panel and select internet options, advanced tab, and click on the reset button at the bottom of the internet options menu. Press OK then exit and try IE again.
You can also get to this menu via IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced. -
No it doesn't work
-
What happens when you try to run IE 32bit? I would only concentrate on that issue at the moment. Also, do you get an error code?
-
When I open IE 32 bit. The page immediate said:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
What you can try:
[Diagnose Connection Problems]
! More information
And there are no error codes whatsoever. Every other programmes, especially games that require constant patching, aren't working and I could see the same thing above in their patch windows and with a little pop-up window saying either error or download failure.
Edit: And thanks for staying with me for so far, I am really frustrated over this especially firefox which I relied upon so much, thank you very much. -
Also, when I go to cmd and ping default gateway. I got this:
Pinging 10.1.2.30 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.1.2.30: bytes=32 time<1ms ITL=128
Reply from 10.1.2.30: bytes=32 time<1ms ITL=128
Reply from 10.1.2.30: bytes=32 time<1ms ITL=128
Reply from 10.1.2.30: bytes=32 time<1ms ITL=128
ping statistics for 10.1.2.30:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <100% loss>,
Aproximated round trip times in milli-second:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
Donno if this is helpful or not.
Edit: I have tried running safe mode and IE without add-on. It is still the same result. -
I was looking at my Kaspersky and there are two entries for IE. one for the 32bit ver and one for the 64bit ver. I can deny or allow access for either or both.
Try turning OFF (Exiting) your Internet Security Program for a short time and see if things work. If so, we will go from there. I have to go for now but will check back later.
If turning off our IS program works, it may be easier to uninstall it and then reinstall and allow it setup its defaults. We will cross that bridge if we come to it. -
I have only 3 IS programmes: Avira, Threatfire and Windows Firewall. Having all three of them turned off and threafire uninstalled. The problem is still there

With firefox also not working, I am beginning to think you have a botched OS install but before recommending you do a new clean install (I can already see the tears) try my suggestion in the next paragraph.
You may want to create a new post with a link to this thread on the Networking and Wireless forum here on NBR, lots of knowledgable people there on these type of issues. -
I know i've seen this before. You either have a virus that messed up your 32-bit LSPs, or it got somehow messed up during the upgrade.
Run this command at the Run prompt:
Code:netsh winsock reset

You should be seeing me dancing somewhere on the street by now.
Thank you very much!
And deeastman, special thanks to you as well for your time and effort. Really appreciate it. I will buy you a drink next time if you come down to England. -
Asdamine, I am glad your problem was resolved with the solution provided by "The_Unique". I learned something today also.
I have used that solution before, as well, when unable to connect to the internet, but I never thought to suggest it since Internet Explorer 64bit worked. I will have to do some additional reading to understand. -
To be honest, if you asked me to explain it for you, i couldn't. But it works and that's what matters. I have stumbled upon this while cleaning a friends' computer of viruses, it worked, so no additional research was done since i was on a deadline.
