I'm having a weird problem. Windows isn't allowing me to claim unallocated space on the drive for the main partition. Weirdly though it's allowing it for the Lenovo recovery partition. Any advice would be appreciated.

Windows' disk management tool won't allow you to extend a partition if the space isn't contiguous, nor will it allow you to move partitions around. Time to dust that gparted live cd if you have one. If not, time to make a gparted live cd or flash drive. That tool will allow you to move partitions around or extend partitions to non contiguous space. Note that windows will probably run a chkdsk at startup if you do some moving of the OS partition or extend it to non contiguous space. Personally, i'd move the lenovo partition to "the end" of the disc then extend the windows partition.
