I'm referring to the anomalies that i posted here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-software-wiped-out-registry.html#post9056734

Basically my problem now is that I am still unable to remove the "power meter" from the taskbar.

I'm able to uncheck the "always show icon on the taskbar". which will remove the icon.
however, the next time i logon/restart the computer; the power meter is showing up again.

    any idea what is wrong?
how do i make windows 'remember' the setting?

what is the relevant registry entry for this settings (in regedit?)?

    OS is XP SP3

did you right click on that power icon and see if there are any other options?

the only other thing i can think of is maybe MS powertoys "tweakUI" has an option to disable that, but i cant remember:

    i have tweakUI.
i have already tried 'repairing' everything under the repair section.
where is the option to disable the power meter?

iirc, there is no option that would say turn off permanently by right clicking on the icon. only open. but i will check when i get the chance.

Have you tried going into safe mode and unchecking the "always show icon on the taskbar" in the power options control panel?

If there is nothing in local settings do you have a recent restore point you can go back to?

If nothing's in that sub folder, then there's quite a bit missing. Have you backed up your registry before?

Safe mode does nothing... what should i be doing there anyway?[

QUOTE=JOSEA;9069764]If there is nothing in local settings do you have a recent restore point you can go back to?[/QUOTE]

no... i disable that right after i first installed the OS... long time ago...

    no...

is there a way to just do a fresh one?

iirc there is a repair tool somewhere... i think it might have been under the windows install disc or something... can't remember what its called.. will that work?

i guess what i need to do currently is to rebuild the registry. anyway to do that?

Gimme a bit and I will break out my backup laptop and go to that registry key and copy the registry entry that controls it (provided I can locate it). If I can find it I will export it and PM it over to you. Other than that, the only option is to do a clean install.

EDIT: Power configuration settings are in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\GlobalPowerPolicy
Check the Policies entry. The 4th to last number on the bottom hex value should read 15, try changing it to 14. This is what changes in my power policy when I uncheck the "show power icon in taskbar". Restart and see if it works.

Well at least you know what registry entry to change next time it happens.
