    Hi,

System restore is unable to complete on my computer as it says : failed to extract copy of directory from restore point. Then it tells me it is unable to find %systemroot%\registration; Dest: ComPlusStaging. This seems to be a fairly common problem but nobody seems to have a solution other than do a repair install of windows 7, problem is mine was OEM installed so it did not come with a recovery disc. I have tried setting shadow manager to auto, trying restore in safe mode, disabled firewall and avast!, but to no avail. I do not want to restore to factory settings and if I restored to my system image disc, I would lose a lot of important files. What can I do to fix this problem as system restore is a very important tool to me.

I am running Win 7. SPNone. I have never used a registry cleaner, nor have I hacked around with the registry so it is not caused by me I believe. I do not have a virus on my system either and can garuntee this 100%. It seems that Windows update caused this problem in an attempt to fix a security glitch. Any solutions or any reason why this happened?

Does easy transfer save your files and settings. Are you saying you have no 25 digit key to make it genuine again once you do a clean install. I would find some way to copy those important files to an exterior hdd and do a clean install.
System restore on my XP Pro Vaio quit working shortly after I purchased the computer. I tried putting it back to the c drive and system restore would quit working shortly afterwords. When I upgraded to 7 doing a clean install this solved the problem.

So will easy transfer transfer everything on my hard drive including applications (I cannot reinstall all of them, MS Office keys will no longer work, etc.) and then I can revert back to factory default and then copy the saved files onto the hard drive and everything will be good?

I used the easy transfer last weekend on a Vista hand me down that I upgraded to 7. I was only interested in the music and office software settings. When I used it it transferred the music and the settings only for the office software. I and my sister no longer had the office software disk. It is a 2007 office version. Prior to running the iso of 7 I burnt to disk I ran a free key finder. It found the product key for her Vista operating system and the office 2007 product key. I ran it on my computer and it showed the operating system product key but did not give the 2010 office product key. Once I had 7 on the computer I ran the easy transfer and found a download for the office software and took care of this. I do not believe easy transfer will do everything you need. I could be wrong. I know some people use disk image software for this and there are free versions. Keyfinder | Magical Jelly Bean
