Recently, about 50% of the times I open my laptop lid (causing the system to wake up from sleep), I find that it has rebooted because "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown."
I had been experiencing crashes that Windows identified as being a Norton problem, and I ran a Norton removal tool, and those crashes have stopped.
Could this new problem be related to the Norton problem?
I don't even have Norton installed, I only had it as a trial before reinstalling Vista.

I am having the same problem. I never had Norton though, am using ZoneAlarm suite.

I have the same problem, but it happens 100% of the time for me. Sleep effectively does a hard shutdown of my computer, causing a improper shutdown.

have u checked and see that whatever power modes u were in, that the hard drive should be "never" turned off?
cheers ... -
same problem when i set vista to sleep.
i return to find it hard booting, recovered from unexpected shutdown
no norton nor zone alarm here -
I had a coworker's laptop that did the same thing. It ended up being a Bluetooth driver. It took me a full day to diagnose as I ended up installing each driver one at atomic. and then ran it through its paces to find the capital. since none of the error logging features of Windows could not catch. it.
