I was looking through all the installed programs on my laptop one day when I found a codec package named "Vista Codec Package". I already have K-lite Codec installed, so I uninstalled the Vista package. No problems so far.
However, when I tried opening itunes, an error came out, saying that DEP won't allow itunes to run. After going to Wikipedia, wondering what in the world DEP is (Data Execution Prevention), I tried to fix the problem by trying to make DEP allow itunes to run. Result: Didn't work as itunes needed DEP to be enabled for it to run. Also, I tried installing itunes again; still the same result (or lack thereof).
So, after a system restore (Revo Uninstaller always creates a restore point before uninstalling any programs), Vista Codec package came back, and so did my laptop's ability to run itunes. This, I figured then, is conclusive proof that uninstalling Vista Codec package caused DEP to not allow itunes to run.
Can someone help me figure out how to get rid of Vista Codec package without any problems? And also offer explanations on how a codec package would disallow itunes to run by using an almost (at least, I think it is) unrelated security measure in Windows Vista?

Seems like the Vista Codec Pack installed something related to iTunes playback over K-Lite, and when it was removed that space was left empty.
I would recommend removing both Vista and K-Lite and getting CCCP, as K-Lite is particularly known for being bloated and redundant. -
Tried uninstalling both Vista and K-Lite packs, then did a reboot, then installed CCCP. Result: still didn't work. I should mention that Vista Codec Pack was installed already when I bought my laptop, then I installed K-Lite without uninstalling the Vista Pack. It didn't cause any problems with regards to movie playing. And iTunes still worked fine.
The iTunes problem happened right after Vista Codec package was uninstalled. If worst comes to worst, I just might let Vista Pack stay in my computer until I do a clean install of Windws Vista, but that might not be for a very long time, seeing as I don't have the installation disks. -
YAY! Got iTunes to finally open! Here's what I did:
1. After the uninstallation of Vista Codec package, iTunes stopped working, as expected. I then opened the registry editor to see if anything was wrong/missing.
2. I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc. and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Inc. and I noticed something. The folders was abnormally empty. There wasn't even a folder for iTunes.
3. To double-check, I went to my desktop which also had iTunes installed. When I browsed to the same folders in the registry editor, I found many "things" (I don't know what to called them; entries?) which was missing from my laptop, including a folder for iTunes.
4. With that in mind, I performed a system restore on my laptop. I went back to the registry editor and exported the registry entries for Apple Computer, inc and Apple Inc. to the desktop as .reg files.
5. I then uninstalled Vista Codec Package as per usual. Once again, iTunes fails to work.
6.After double-clicking on both .reg files.............iTunes FINALLY WORKED!!
Once again I'm happy!!
Uninstalling A Codec Package gave me a problem...
