Lately Windows (Vista) has started giving me "Unknown USB not recognized" error when no new USB devices have been plugged in or installed. Also the average CPU usage throughout each session has gone up suddenly. This happened before but went away automatically. The CPU usage spiked up last time as well. Does anyone have a clue, what's going on?

Start > type 'Device Manager' > uninstall your USB devices and let Windows reinstall them automatically.

Uninstalled the unknown USB device from the device manager and things seem to have smoothened temporarily. Don't know if this will stick till next restart.
