My desktop icons have way too much empty space between them:

As seen in left, you could almost place another icon between them.
As seen in right, the icon looks normal, but when hovered over the highlight is almost twice as wide as you'd think.

Changing the icon size by basic means do not help. The icons just shrink but the width stays the same. (ctrl+mouse wheel)

So how would i go around getting them to a reasonable size?

Rightclick desktop > Personalize > Window Color > Advanced Appareance Settings > Icon spacing (hoz and vez), lower them until you find something you like.. You might have to logoff/on each time, or terminate explorer.exe but yeah.

Great answer to a question about a fairly obscure Windows setting! I have never seen that setting listed there before. Now why would Microsoft bury that setting there?

Excellent question. Answer: Because that setting has always been there, at the very least since the days of Win2K, but possibly going back as far as Win9X. Now, of course I know that's not a good answer, because the immediate follow-up question would be why the Windows desktop settings still have not been consolidated into a single, logical, and modern dialog. We could also ask why Windows 7 still uses the same antiquated bitmap-based desktop graphics foundations as all the Windows versions before it. We can ask, but I'm not sure who will answer, and when...
