Just wondered how long it should take for a PC to load the desktop, sidebar and all your startup progs. Has SP2 slowed it at all booting ?
To start the ball rolling, my Aspire 9301 2 gb running Vista HP now takes 1 min 40 secs from hitting the power button. Down from 1 min 15 before SP2.
-
I just counted it, when I reached 10, it was all fired up.
-
About a minute or so, maybe a little less.
EDIT: Just timed it (sort of) and from pushing the power button, through typing in the password, until I can get the first app fired off and running, is about 1 min, 20 sec, or thereabouts. -
+/- 1 minute.
-
30 or so secs to get into vista, about another 10-15 for programs and such to reach completely ready status
-
It's the sidebar that really slows mine. Takes 30 secs or so since SP2 to load it's two official gadgets.
-
About 1min 15s to the login screen, 1min 30s to a desktop on SP2, it used to be 1min to login on SP1. (This is a T7500 2.2GHz with 3GB RAM and 32 bit).
I think young Silas up there must have the fastest PC in the world (or is he just a bit confused?)
Edit: Just updated to the latest Nvidia driver and boot went down to 53s to login, 1min 10 to desktop. Cool ! -

One......... two........ two and half.......... lol
So SP2 slowed yours too.
My desktop appears in 50 seconds, tray icons take another 20 to 30, at which point I can get online, but it's the sidebar as I say that's really slowed down with SP2. -
Like 30secs, but without counting the dual boot menu and fingerprint login, I would say about 20 secs.

20-40sec depending on system. default setup. right now installing intel ssd to see what it changes
-
I wouldn't know; the last time I booted was a few weeks ago.
-
Mine is about 30seconds to boot into windows.
However, I have to wait about 30seconds more for all the start-up and stability. -
My laptop is about 1 min from pushing the power button to ready to use. I don't really have any programmes that load on startup.
I haven't noticed any difference between SP1 and SP2 -
Less than a minute for me.
Cin -
39.1 seconds Vista Ultimate SP 2 (Password is disabled)
51.2 seconds Windows 7 (Password is Enabled)
Password is disabled on Vista due to some tests I was running that required multiple restarts. Both times I started the count from selecting which OS to start. So given the password entry time I say pretty even. -
You must have a SSD?
My notebook boots and is usable in 30 seconds. My desktop probably faster, but I never turn if off so I'm not so sure. -
28 seconds from power on till I see the Windows Screen, then another 7-8 seconds to load everything.
Repeat after meh n00bs.........Windows XP FTW
Windows XP pntws j00 -

Little under 30 seconds to the login screen, and that includes GRUB. After login, maybe a little over 5 seconds to functionality.

my lappy boots in 45 sec. which i cant turn off ati control panel but dont knoe ifi need it or not that should shave off 10 secs..........at least.....
-
oops missed that.....
sorry for teh !ntrusion -
But, to go back to the subject at hand, I timed boot a little more carefully and got 1 min, 35 sec, which isn't too bad considering I still haven't taken most of the _HP bloat off the new system yet.

And back to the topic: I just checked it, it takes 23 seconds to boot Vista SP2, which means from BIOS-POST finished (which takes another 3 or so seconds) until usable desktop with all applications loaded. But this is with an SSD and not only for that reason not at all representative for usual cases.
It should take less than 90 seconds to boot Vista on most computers (see "Edit" below!).
Service Pack 2 does indeed increase boot time on many computers compared to Service Pack 1.
Edit: The 90 second boot time I stated is based on my personal experience with various computers. As davepermen pointed out, 75% of Vista SP1 computers are able to boot within 50 seconds according to Microsoft telemetry. -
I need to really get an accurate time on mine, now....

Mine takes about 2 minutes to get to a usable state, I would think. -
And Christoph, that was a funny read. -

Remember that by default, Vista doesn't completely turn off the computer if you click the power button in the start menu. If that button is orange instead of red on your start menu, you have to click the arrow beside it to get the real shutdown option, or use your energy settings plan to permanently change that behavior.

Mine takes like 30 sec. KIS 09 takes little more time to showup its icon.

Mine boots slower than I would like and faster than I imagine.
48 seconds, and 65 seconds before I can actually do anything. -
See sig for boot time to desktop. For a fully usable desktop with Objectdock, Avira, Daemontools, Sync center, and a few other apps, it takes around 56 seconds.

Thanks people, I've been readin' em all.
So my 1.6Ghz Turion Aspire with 2gb isn't perhaps to shabby. Just seems really slow now with SP2. Timed it again from cold,
Welcome screen 48secs
Desktop 52secs
Tray icons, wireless showing connected 1' 20''
All usable at this point.
Sidebar 1'55''
Thanks...interesting reading. -
You know, for all the research, you could actually add a poll like the thread title says!

I tried it on my desktop.
The problem now is that you can't turn it off.
Have you try msconfig, service.msc and ccleaner(startup option)? -
I wonder how many people who have longer-than-usual startups with good hard drives have disabled the ReadyBoost service.
Remember, disabling services yields so marginal results you shouldn't bother, nevermind what 'hardcore tweakers' say. Especially ReadyBoost... it's tied into ReadyBoot - which is the boot optimizer. After every boot, it analyses the log and modifies the boot files to ensure a faster boot next time. -
I have ordred a SSD but this is with WD 320 ScorpioBlack...Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
On the Sony in my sig.....
Vista Home Premium 32 bits SP2
83 system processes
20 secs shutdown / 58 secs startup & ready -
38.7 seconds to password login
59.3 seconds until Applications are usable -
Its a tad below 2 minutes until I can use it - no sidebar by the way, what do I need that for?
Oddly enough it takes a while after logging on - possibly hasn't yet setled after I decided to restore everything and reinstal the whole OS etc.
Definitely overall faster than before -
I'm using Windows 7 X64 atm, but when I had Vista Business X64, I timed it as 24 seconds from Vista loading screen, to loading up Google in Firefox.
-
I did a lot of tweakings and managed to get Vista SP2 to boot in 50 secs (from the moment I press the power button to a working desktop). I got a total of 10 startup programs and 72 system processes running. It used to be 45 secs on Vista SP1.
Unofficial poll ? How long does your Vista PC take to boot into Windows.
