I did a clean install of Vista x64 last night and have some updates that need to install. I'm down to 6 (from 70+) that still need to go in, but I keep getting "update failed" when I try to download and install them.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

the update screen should contain a code of the failed atttempt. can u share that with us? browse the section for failed updates and vista, u might get previous inputs that pertained to ur issue as well

    cheers ...

Do you have SP1 yet? If not, bypass Windows Update by using the SP1 standalone installer.

Otherwise, post which update it is and any error info it gives.

No SP1, does x64 even have an SP1? I'm assuming it does since you brought it up, can you point me to the stand alone installer you're talking about please?

Code is 80072F78, keeps telling me my connection with the update server failed. But it's only for the 6 updates remaining........it installed all others with no issue.

The 64 bit versions of Vista do have a service pack. You can download it from Microsoft's site. I thinks its about twice as big as the 32 bit version of the service pack.

Gotta love slow connections.........5 hours and some change to download.......and that's if the connection doesn't go down.

What a PITA..............posting this for anyone that runs into this issue.

After downloading and installing the SP1 for my x64 Vista Home Premium, I continued to get "update failed" for 3 updates. KB938371, KB950126, and KB947562. I went to Google and found links to download them seperately instead of going through Windows Update. The last two installed fine, the first kept giving me the failure message. I went back to Google and learned that Windows Update was attempting to install the 32bit version of the update and the download I'd done was also for the 32bit version. I found the x64 version, downloaded it seperately and installed it and that solved the issue.

Hope this helps anyone that runs into this issue in the future.

Yeah it is easiest if you have a failed install to Google the pack and find the standalone installer. I had one a while back that refused to work through Windows Update and this was the only thing that eventually worked.
