    Hey guys,

I have an Asus G55VW laptop running Windows 7. I'm trying to upgrade it to Windows 10. The upgrade process runs smoothly until it reaches around 76%. After that point it hangs. I've removed antivirus and malware scanners. The installer says that my PC is compliant. I've tried about 4 times and arrived at the same result every time. My last resort is to do a clean install, but I prefer not to. Does anyone have a recommendation or know of a resolution to this type of problem?

    TIA,

    grecinos

usually a forced restart when it hangs solves this

Yea, I thought so too. I force restarted on every installation. So far, no luck. I'm assuming it's a driver issue, or a conflicting app. No clue how to diagnose this. Would be nice if I could see the install log, perhaps see what happened before the failed installation.

If you're getting W10 from Windows Update, try downloading the ISO instead. See my sig.

I tried both methods. Via the Windows update feature and via a USB Drive using the Media Creation Tool. Both of which ended in the same results.

no, don't use the windows update method: do a full clean install. even when you do a clean install there's an option to skip entering the key.

That's what the OP is trying to avoid.

Well, a clean install is always the best option over doing it through Windows update.

Mind me asking but why don't you want to do a clean install. When you do any OS install it's alway best to start fresh.

I didn't suggest that because he seems to not wanna due do that probably due to a lot of software/games he has installed. But IMO, I agree with my bigger brother Mr. toughasnails, in this scenario, it seems like the only viable solution. Additionally, you never EVER want to have an OS that was upgraded from an older OS. The amount of invalid registry entries that will be carried over and unknown bugs that you may encounter are way too time consuming to troubleshoot you would rather do a fresh install and start from a clean state. That way if you encounter an error, you immediately know what it was, perhaps one incompatible driver or one incompatible program, but with an upgrade, you wouldn't even know where to start.

PS: As of Windows 10 build 10586, it will accept your Windows 8 / Windows 7 key right away and activate Windows 10 just fine using that same key.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for all your input. Everyone has provided good suggestions. The main reason I wanted to do an upgrade was because I have a lot of apps like MS Outlook that require a significant amount of work to restore everything such as emails (folders) and user accounts. I have a biometric reader that I use for dozens of websites and some apps. Unfortunately, the biometric software doesn't have a reliable import/export feature. So, it would require that I go through the websites and apps, one by one, to apply biometric authentication. These are just a few examples. None of which are impossible, just requires time.

Now, what I ended up doing... After being unable to successfully upgrade, I decided (pretty much had no other choice) to do a do a clean install. So far so good. I was able to install Outlook and import the data and re-create the user accounts. I was unsuccessful to get the biometric reader to work, I get an error message every time I try to use the software and can't enroll my finger prints. I'm assuming there's a patch that will fix this problem. Everything else seems to be installing as planned.

So, that's my situation and my solution. If you guys have any more input or questions feel free to post a reply.

    Cheers.
