I'm waitng for my new custom built HP dv7t with windows home premium with 4g ram and 64 bit. I'm wondering if i should upgrade to Ultimate. I use Adobe Creative Suite and wonder if Ultimate will use to many resources. Any input would be appreciated. I like new technology so I'm curoius about Ultimate. I really enjoy vista premium.

What do you want out of Ultimate? If the answer is "I don't know" then I think we have the clear answer for you, stick to Home Premium and save the money. If you want a specific Ultimate feature, then it would be worth considering. As it stands, Home Premium is fine for 90+% of home users.

Ok, like Chris Pirillo said, the difference between Premium and Ultimate is Green and Black.

Another thing:
The moment you upgrade your OS you downgrade your computers performance.
Reason - you get a lot of junk that loads too....
My Vista Business on a Sony loads at least 10 processes more than Home Premium on my mothers Medion.
i.e. I can only agree with the above. -
I know its off topic but whats so special of ultimate? At least i want to know the main things. Also does it actually make your computer work better or same?
-
If anything at all, it'll slow down your computer because it runs more junk.
You get I belive a Poker game... (who needs that?)
The only useful thing I can think of is "BitLocker" which is a drive encryption software - but using that should slow down your computer too, and I'm not sure how it worksl.
What I find odd though is, that this has not been included in Vista Business.
If you need more than Home Premium (and don't need the MediaCenter, I don't) you're better of with Vista Business than with Vista Ultimate. -
Ultimate also has some exclusive features, like the aforementioned Bitlocker Drive Encryption, and also includes a service called Windows Ultimate Extras which was supposed to be a big incentive to "go ultimate."
Unfortunately, the only things to come out of the Extras program have been lackluster at best: Multiple Language Packs (Seriously, Microsoft?) a poker game, Dreamscenes (animated wallpapers for the desktop) and new sound schemes.
If you don't plan to do any of the business stuff, skip Ultimate. It's just not worth it, IMO.
BTW-to compare Vista versions go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/ultimate.aspx -
Thanks. That helps. I will stick to Home Premium.

The same happened to me on XP with a clean instal:
Home ran less processes than Professional.
Now about Vista Business - there is no way I can run less processes, even with all Sony features off than my mother...
Additonally - I was trying to optimize my Sony (did some work n my mother's laptop too)
At the moment (with "Sony stuff")
69 processes while running the following:
SonicStage
QIP
TaskManager
Outlook -
Compare two fresh loads - Vista Business to Vista Home Premium. The Home Premium should have a few extra processes running for the media center.
XP is different.
XP Home = Vista Home Basic
XP Pro = Vista Business
XP MCE = Vista Home Premium, arguably Ultimate
Vista Home Basic would have the least processes of all. -
Well - I think I switched off the Media Centre in a way...
Any way.
Unless you have a processlist - lets not argue, it'll lead no-where. -
I don't have a process list, but I could get one. I don't really care enough though, and I agree arguing is pointless.

Ultimate is NOT slower than any other version as long as you turn off the things you don't need.
One nice thing about Ultimate is that it disables and unloads components that run in every other version to control software and offer the upgrades. -

Yeah, I run ultimate too. My system can handle it, and I it for like, 6 bucks. Why not?

I went from Home Premium to Ultimate for one main reason - Complete PC Backup, which has been a godsend considering how often I botch my system up.
DreamScene is nice, though. -
I honestly don't use any of the features of Ultimate... or Home Premium. I would be best off with Business (need RDP)
Upgrade to Ultimate?
