Recently got the Dell XPS M1210 and I have a free upgrade to Vista that expires in March. I've read a bunch of posts and reviews on Vista and I still can't see why I would upgrade and have to deal with new bugs and quirks. What opinions to you guys have?

I'd get the CD but wait until SP1 is released (or summer if there aren't too many bugs). I'd also wait until a decent security firm releases good software for a firewall, AV, and spam blocker before actually upgrading.

Thats a good point. I didnt consider that the McAfees and Nortons wouldnt have stuff ready, not to mention updated drivers for some of my software. What about all the "lack of user control" comments that I've been reading about?

    So let's break this down:

You just bought a brand new computer, and Dell is going to give you a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium (should be Home Premium based on the laptop you bought and the OS it comes with by default) for a few bucks shipping & handling and you'd say no to that?

You're entitled to it, whether or not you decide to actually install it anytime soon. But even so you'd pass on it and then what, a year from now if you decide you'd like to give Vista a shot on that laptop you then end up paying full price for it instead of breaking out the DVD you got from Dell for shipping & handling in March?

That doesn't make much sense to me.

No one is going to force you to install it if you choose to apply for the Express Upgrade program, but at least have the common sense to accept the offer and get the DVD so you do have it if and when you decide you'd like to see what Vista is all about. Save yourself ~$200 later on and take the Express Upgrade while it's being offered.

Better to have it just in case than not and kick yourself for it later on.

    Just my $.02...

I would definitely pay the S&H and get the CD. You don't have to install it until you're ready to do so--I also would wait until SP1 or so myself--but you'll already have a copy of Vista waiting for you whenever you are ready.
