vista home premium -> upgrade to Windows 7 Home PRemium or Ultimate

i guess the problems that might arise will be programs and drivers that might not work properly after the upgrade. i dont know for sure though :/

As has been stated quite a few times on this forum, you can upgrade on the same level or higher, but not lower. You can't upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Premium - that requires a clean install. You can upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Premium or Ultimate.
Remember: upgrade means using the upgrade media to do an in-place upgrade, without having to reinstall applications. Clean means reformatting and losing all installed programs and data. -
I know that you can buy the upgrade to go from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional - what I do not know is if you can do an inplace installation from Vista Home Premium. This I have yet to find an answer for anywhere - including these forums and those operated directly by Microsoft. So far all I have is supposition - no 100%, yes you can. -
Have you read this from ARS Technica?
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/ne...ws-7-what-xp-and-vista-users-need-to-know.ars
The upgrade path is similar to the one you did from XP to Vista:
Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate
So, if you have HP, you upgrade to 7 HP, and so on. If you want to move to 7 Professional, you purchase an upgrade key. That was the same thing you did going from XP to Vista.
So, if the Microsoft people you've talked to don't know that path, you can enlighten them if you call them back. -
You can probably do a clean install with the upgrade media, as long as you own the version that you are upgrading.
Years ago I bought an XP upgrade for my 98SE machine. Put a new hard drive in the machine, start the install, at some point it asks you to insert your 98 disk so it knows that you qualify for the upgrade, then it continues with the clean install. I have read that Vista worked the same way so I'm assuming W7 will also.
Upgrade vs Full install Version
