Is there any downsides to using the upgrade option to go from Vista 64 to Win 7 64.

I know ideally a fresh install would be best.... but for $49.99 are there any real downsides to going the "upgrade route" instead of buying the full priced version?

    Thanks.

    Perfect m8.
After install - just use the drivers disk that came with the system I suppose? (except for things that I have updated like graphics drivers, sound drivers etc.)

    Thanks.

A clean install is nice, but I too would like to know opinions on the original question- I don't want to get rid of all the programs I installed

A clean install simply ensures you don't have any unnecessary files left on your computer from your previous windows edition. So if you don't mind your Windows folder taking up 50GB of your hard drive as Windows 7 install left various assorted files from Windows Vista on your drive, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with simply upgrading Vista to Windows 7 to ensure your programs are kept operational and you don't have to reinstall them all. You will also probably have to ensure that your devices are all using the appropriate Windows 7 drivers too, although the upgrade program is usually pretty good about cleaning tnis up for you.

I'm running Vista 64. Does anyone know for sure that the pre-order versions of 7 Home Premium have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

So since the Windows 7 Upgrade will allow for a clean install and it has both 32 and 64 bit versions in the box, plus it's on sale temporarily for only $50, then I should probably go ahead and pre-order it, right?

I'm planning on going through Amazon - sound good?

    Thanks

Yup! It's a great thing to do actually, since the pre-order price is a very inexpensive $50 (or $99 if you are going with the Professional edition).
