Ok, so i currently have two laptops, one is an Acer Aspire 5590(XP) and another one is Asus F8sn. I got the Acer laptop from one of my cousins as he got a new laptop and he gave this one to me(inspite knowing i had my ASUS).

Apparently, his so called "gift" was REALLY and i mean REALLY SCREWED. Now that i think of it, why would he give me a laptop free of charge (lol).

His laptop cant even boot up properly and when it does it lagggggggssss like crap and it hangs loading up msn,bit comet, aim, some acer junk, quicktime and some tray application that wants to install itself and no matter how many times i click cancel it KEEPS COMING BACK.

So my question is, the acer laptop is screwed and i dont even bother to try and fix it, but it is a shame to let it just sit and collect dust so is it possible to install Vista into an XP service pack 2 laptop which is really and i mean REALLY screwed(registry problems, viruses, spywares). The files in the computer dont matter im just wondering if i can actually install vista in that thing.

I know it'll be troublesome and all cuz i want to reformat the entire computer and then i'll have to find all the drivers for the computer and other crap.

So in conclusion: CAN I INSTALL VISTA INTO A REALLY SCREWED UP LAPTOP?(which is Windows Vista capable)

I'm actually a newbie myself but every person on the forum will definitely feel that it's a shame to let it go to waste.

Why dont you just do a reformat and reinstall XP? (that should get rid of everything) Also what is the specs of the notebook?

See how it runs with a Linux Live CD. That should reveal whether the problem is hardware or software.

And if it is desperately slow then it might be possessed by a few trojans and viruses.

For vista, you will defnitely need 2 GB of ram or more to get any performance you will be happy about.

oh...crap!...so i gotta have 2 gb ram? T_T. maybe i'll just reinstall XP then but i dont have a CD for it.......should i buy the installation CD for XP(do they sell those anymore???) or am i supposed to use the recovery cd for it because the only thing he gave me was the laptop and charger.

Edit: Wait what do you mean buy to get any performance you will be happy about??? so is 1 gb still ok?

Vista will run on 1GB of RAM, but it will be slow. For it to run smoothly, atleast 2GB is recommended. Just format and re-install XP?

512mb ram is definitely not enough to run vista. Either buy more ram, install xp, or do like John said and try running Ubuntu live cd... that should work well.
