What I really want to do is just mirror most of the harddrive to my new laptop from my desktop. I figure normal files and folders such as all my documents will transfer over no problem. But what about my programs? Am I going to have to go back and install 64-bit versions of Steam and such?

I'm only really looking to make this transition as smooth and quick as possible because I want to reformat my old harddrive.

You should reinstall all of your programs, all of your documents, pictures etc can be transferred easily though. It's not that you have to install 64-bit versions, but windows has to know where the programs are installed and create the registry entries for them. Anyways, most of the programs do not have 64-bit executables.
