I'm receiving my laptop today, and it comes with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I have a student license of windows 7 professional 64 bit.
Is it possible to upgrade, or do I have to format and reinstall?

Can I upgrade by inserting the windows 7 professional 64 bit?
I can't find any information about it, only:
- vista to windows 7
- windows 7 to a "higher edition" of windows 7 using windows anytime upgrade
I don't have a windows anytime upgrade, just a professional cd + license. -
Upgrade paths are like this
Home premium 64 bit = Home premium 64 bit
different SkU will not allow to upgrade to Different SkU unless Anytime upgrade is used. (This is from what I know) -
i think that is when you are going from vista HP to win 7 Pro and it should be ok with win7 to win 7 but not sure either...
theres only one way to find out, thats give it a try if it works then great if not then you know you have to clean install
also why dont you wanna clean install...
1, its quicker to do (especially if you have no files on there yet)
2, you arnt left with all the crapware from the oem...
id say do a clean install anyway... -
You can clean install the Win 7 Pro.

Are you sure you do not have Windows Anytime Upgrade? You should see a link to this app on your start menu. If not, run the following file:
%windir%\system32\WindowsAnytimeUpgradeUI.exe
The Windows Anytime Upgrade would require simply typing in the new key.

You need to perform what MS calls a "custom install" from the upgrade media that you have.
I just went from Vista Home Premium X64 to 7 Pro X64 last night and I am loving it so far. -
jochem is NOT asking about a move from Vista to Windows 7. A move from Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) to Windows 7 Professional (x64) should be done through Windows Anytime Upgrade.

or just a plain upgrade clean install cos that way he wont have all the crapware
