I purchased Windows XP Pro and wanted to install that over my XP Home. I plan to install this on a new Dell computer. I want to keep some of the preinstalled software (such as the cd and dvd burning software) but not the other crap programs (like AOL). Is it possible to pick which programs to save when upgrading? Or can I just have it reformat to XP Pro (delete everything) and use the Dell restore cd to reinstall the programs I want? Thank You

your options are
1. upgrade to xp pro, the only thing that will happen is that u will upgrade, removing apps is not part of the equation, u will have to do that after the upgrade that same way u would before upgrading
2. reformat and install xp pro, you will be starting from scratch and will have to reinstall any apps you want -
just so i understand, i can install certain apps from the dell restore cd? i should check to see which ones are on the cd before i reformat. thanks

i'm not sure about the dell restore cd and what apps it has. i reformated my machine as soon as i got it and i already have all the stuff i want/need. there wasn't anything that dell gave me that i wanted to keep.
yeah, u should def check to see if those apps are available for you if you want to keep them. -
If you are looking for burning software, CDBurnerXP and Deepburner are both free and work quite well for basic burning tasks like making audio and data CDs, and data DVDs.

The Dell Restore CD that you have to burn is actually a clean install so it will only have the apps that comes with XP. There should have been a couple of blue cds that came with your system, and they have most of the software including the cd and burning software. If you are wanting the Dell apps like Dell Media experience, Quickset, etc, or if you don't have any of the blue CDs, you can call dell, and they will send you them to you (should be free of charge and you'll get them usually within 2 business days)
Hope this helps,
