    Hi there

I have had to re-install the XP Home edition OS on my Packard Bell Easynote E6310 notebook, I kept the file structure when re-installing and now I have a folder called C:\documents and settings\user that I am unable to access, this was where I had the few files I had placed on the computer.

The OS is telling me that C:\documents and settings\user is not accessible. Access is denied.

Is there anyway I can access the folder or delete it, I have tried usong safe mode but this does not work :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Log in as that user or if it doesn't exist, create the identical user name then try to delete it when logged in as that user. Or try booting to safe mode with a user that has admin rights and delete the folder. you could always re-image and format the partition this time. I've always found that not formatting when re-imaging causes more problems than it fixes.

Thanx for the advice, I've tried everything that you've suggested apart from formatting the drive and I was kind of hoping there'd be someway of getting into the folder so I can recover the files in there.

In future I'm going to save my files on a separate disk and in a folder in the root of C drive rather than in the documents and settings folders, that way if I have to re-install the OS I've got a backup and the folder in the root of the C drive should still be accessible.

Hey, ho, lesson learned I suppose. Thanx for the advice :)

    One more thing to try...
When logged in as the user to which the folder you are trying to remove belongs to, Create a folder on your desktop with the identical name and then drag it to where the offending folder is. When it asks you if you want to replace it, select yes.

The best way to save your files or (data) is not to put them on the "C" drive. I have data partitions on the internal drive which are backed up onto an external drive.

Erm that's not going to work, because I've re-installed XP Home the user (named user) doesn't exist and I've tried creating a new user of the same name and logging on as that user and creating a folder and replacing It, as you suggested, neither of which works.

I'm not really bothered about removing the folder I can just format the drive and re-install the OS again, I'm trying to access the folder, me being a dumb-ass didn't backup one of the files in the folder - the rest I have copies of :(

Thanx for the help anyway. :)

You're very welcome. What about trying to burn the folder to a cd? You may be able to access the folder then. It's a longshot but it's worth a try. :)

Yeah that's a good idea, I'll give that a go on tuesday when I'm in the office and can download some burning software (my net connections down at home so I'm reeuced to using my blackberry pda lol, preferably not nero though, I think that's what caused the initial crash - it kept telling me there are compatibility issues with XP home.

Currently all I have is a basic installed unactivated XP Home OS with no sound and wmp/realplayer not being able to run my DVD's - they need to connect to the net to download updates/files.

Other than that the disc drive works fine and everything else is ok, well if you don't count the lack of a sound device.

I'm going to upgrade to WMP11 and see if that sorts the problem with the DVD's out and the drivers for the soundcard I can download from the manufacturers website.

So once I've done all that I'll download some decent burning software and see if burning the folder to a cd-r works.

I can only hope, it's no biggie if I lose the file, just very annoying.

Thanx agan for the advice. :)
